A complaint

Publicado por ANA MARIA ARRONDO ESTEBAN el 18 Mayo 2015

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to complain about a three - night holiday in Seville we booked through your company. I have to say that I was not at all satisfied with the breakfast which did not reflect the description on your website.

According to your website, the hotel we were staying at, provides a complete Spanish breakfast made with typical products from Seville, but there we realized that this breakfast was only a cup of coffee and milk and very typical Spanish “Maria” cookies. Nobody saw orange juice, fruits, toast with jam, fresh tomatoes with olive oil or anything like that.

In addition we have a sense of humour and thought that seeing waiters wearing Sevillian clothes was funny, but we expected a good breakfast with good food, not an attempt to have a funny time with poor food.

I would urge you to investigate this matter, and let me know your decision. I also expect some kind of compensation.

Yours faithfully,

Tino Álvarez González, 2ºNA-B

A report

Publicado por ANA MARIA ARRONDO ESTEBAN el 23 Abril 2015

Introduction

The aim of this report is to assess student satisfaction with the study trips to the UK, and to make suggestions for improvements.

Families and halls of residence

Students who spent time with families are happier than students who stayed in the halls of residence, because they could know customs and visit some places with the families. We believe that everyone should stay with a family.

School and classes

In general, students rated the school and classes very highly. Their main criticisms were of the lunch and the length of classes. As regards the lunch, most students think there should be a menu to choose, because they couldn´t feed on a sandwich and they found this repetitive. As for the duration of classes, they consider that six hours per day were too many. We propose five hours per day, which we think should be enough.

People

Depending on the places people are more easy-going and open-minded than in others. For example, people in London and Oxford are friendlier than in Bath and Stratford. We suggest looking for places where people are interested in this kind of study trips.

Free time

Most students think they didn’t have enough time for shopping and practising sport, because they spent too much time visiting monuments and museums. We believe sometimes they should be able to choose what they want to do in their free time.

Conclusion

Overall, the majority of students are very positive about the study trips, and feel that if the suggested changes are implemented, they will spend a good time.

A review

Publicado por ANA MARIA ARRONDO ESTEBAN el 3 Febrero 2015

The impossible

After his debut film, The Orphanage, the Spanish director Alejandro Bayona returns with The Impossible. Set in the southeast of Asia on December 26th 2004, this moving film tells the true story of a Spanish family who vent to Thailand to spend their Christmas holidays.

After exchanging Christmas gifts, Maria (performed by Naomi Watts), Henry (Ewan McGregor) and their three kids, are at the swimming pool of the hotel enjoying their idyllic holidays, until a distant noise suddenly becomes a roar, and without time to escape a tsunami hits their resort. Swept in different directions, Maria and the oldest son in one direction, and Henry and the youngest in another, they will fight to survive and meet each other, although they aren’t sure if everyone has survived. If it weren’t based on a true story the end would seem implausible.

The great strength of this film is the intense and realistic sequences of the disaster, giving us a close, and sometimes even disturbing, approximation of the family experience. The performance of Tom Holland as the older son, Lucas, is brilliant and his scenes with his brave mother showing their mother-son relation are the best of the film. My only criticism of the film is that it focuses on a single family and doesn’t show the suffering of thousands of people affected by this terrible disaster.

Not only is this a film with formidable special effects that recreate the tsunami, but a moving and haunting drama telling the real story of a family. I would recommend it to all lovers of dramas and Alejandro Bayona’s fans, this film  being even better than his first one.

Sounds and stories (exercise 1f page 36)

Publicado por ANA MARIA ARRONDO ESTEBAN el 21 Enero 2015

It was 12:30 at night and Mike had just fallen asleep when the clock ticked. Mike woke up and went to the kitchen to drink a glass of water. Suddenly, he heard a door creaking on the second floor. A deep shiver ran down his back because he was alone in the house. As he climbed up the stairs he listened carefully to the sound, but it seemed like chains screeching. When he reached the top of the stairs the sound stopped. After that he opened the door and his face went pale because he saw his aunt, Mary, who had passed away in that room. Then he realized he was dreaming. He woke up screaming, sobbing. And he couldn’t sleep alone in that house anymore.
