St. John’s night and bonfire in Spain
The traditional midsummer party in Spain is the celebration in honour of San Juan (St. John the Baptist) and takes place in June the 23rd night. It is common in many areas of the country. Parties are organised usually at beaches, where bonfires are lit and a set of firework displays usually take place. Bonfires are lit in the streets and there are fireworks too.
I usually go to the bonfire in Mieres, but this year I went to La Corredoria’s. The bonfire is always a very big one, about three or six meters tall. It gives a lot of heat. In Mieres, people dance the Asturian popular dance: “la danza prima”. They can be about thirty minutes dancing… I never or hardly ever dance, but I think that maybe I sing a bit…
The celebration of Saint John is on the 24th of June, this was from ancient times linked to the summer solstice. Bonfires were used to protect people from evil spirits which were free on this night.
Today, people celebrate this like a party, usually on the beach. People make a bonfire at twelve o`clock in the morning. The students, burn they books like a sign that they have finished the school year.
After that, when the bonfire is smaller, people jump through the bonfire.
Las Fallas de Valencia are a festival they start on 15th of March and finish on 19th of March and they celebrate in a lot of villages of Valencia, in Spain. This festival start in the century XVIII with the carpenters, they put out the things that they don’t use and in this day they fire the furniture, but now the people do monuments with big faces.
In las Fallas the people construct bigs monuments, next the people make the monuments march in the city, and on 19th March in the afternoon the people in the street fire the monuments and make fireworks.
In this festival the streets are illuminated, with many lights. In this party the people usually eat paella.
Hi teacher!! This is the information about a fire celebration:
The Volcanalia
The Volcanalia, in honour of the Roman god Vulcan, is celebrated on 23rd August in Rome.
Vulcan was a fire god entitled to a special priest. The god’s origins are in doubt. Although many Roman gods were originally Etruscan, Vulcan was not because the Etruscans had another fire-god, Sethlans.
Nowadays there’s a history recreation of the war in Mara (Zaragoza) the days near of 23rd August (the original date of the Roumans celebration and the god´s Vulcan day)
ANNUAL FESTIVAL OF FIREWORKS IN BLANES, Valencia.
There is an annual festival of fireworks in Blanes, Valencia. This festival is celebrated since 1970, at the same time as the popular parties of the village, from 22 to 27 july. The festival consists in a competition of fireworks, all nights there is a show of them on the beach.
This festival is espectacular, a lot of people go there, because it is interesting and funny. There, you can see the best pyrotechnics. They show their creations of fireworks at night in the beach.
I didn’t go there, but I will like going there one day, because I think that the fireworks are nice and interesting. For me, they are an art of lights. I think that you should go to the festival.
