On Beauty

Título: On Beauty

Autor: Zadie Smith

Editorial: Penguin

Obra adaptada: NO

Reseña: On Beauty is about an American family whose father is a University Professor, Howard Belsey, specialized in Rembrant. His wife is an activist Afro-American and their children are trying to live their own lives. Besides this, he has been unfaithful to his wife, so she has broken their marriage although they still live in the same house. He feels he is living the worst moment of his life. Apart from his difficult personal life, his colleague and rival about Rembrant, Monty kipps, has been invited to join the university staff.
In the book many characters are described and most of them have a special role. It´s difficult to understand some teenager expressions, because they use a kind of slang that many of us don’t know.
The book is quite boring sometimes, especially when the author, Zadie Smith, writes about the confrontation between Howard Belsey and Monty Kipps and their works about Rembrant. Anyway, Zadie Smith is, in my opinion, quite a good writer and personal conflicts and generational problemas are very well described.

Editorial: Karl Rauch Verlag

Autor: Ingrid Noll

Editorial: Diogenes Verlag

Obra adaptada: NO

Reseña: This book is about Tom’s journey; he is going to visit his fiancée, Angela, who is working in Istanbul. But the journey is more complicated than he expects, some strange things will happen…
I recommend this book because it is entertaining; the story goes quickly; it is easy to read; there aren’t too many difficult words and it isn’t too long so it’s good if you don’t have lot of free time. A glossary is included at the end of the book.

Un aller simple

16 04 2008

Título: Un aller simple

Autor: Didier Van Cauwelaert

Editorial: Le livre de poche

Obra adaptada: NO

Crime Story Collection

Título: Crime Story Collection

Autor: Sara Paretsky and others

Editorial: Penguin Active Reading

Obra adaptada: SI

Nivel: Intermedio

Reseña: This book narrates seven different murder stories. Reading these, you’re going to be able to answer questions like: why does a person turn into a murderer? What reasons make a person kill someone? What’s the way detectives solve murders? Each story is narrated from a different point of view; through some of them you’re going to learn what a murderer thinks and how he acts, and in others you’re going to see what the detectives do to catch them. Read the book, I’m sure you won’t be able to put it down.

Our Mutual Friend

16 04 2008

Título: Our Mutual Friend

Autor: Charles Dickens

Editorial: Heinemann

Obra adaptada: SI

Nivel: Intermedio

Reseña: Our Mutual Friend is Charles Dickens’ last complete novel. In this book the author made a magnificent description of life in London during 1860. Two love stories marked by social tensions are used on the one hand to symbolize the power of love, capable to surpass the differences created by the class structure of the Victorian society and, on the other hand, to explain the fight between two men to conquer the heart of the same woman, which leads them to deceit, death and self-destruction.

Autor: W. Somerset Maugham

Editorial: Heinemann

Obra adaptada: SI

Nivel: Intermedio

Reseña: In this book we can find three different stories. The first story is about how a woman had the creative impulse to write her best-selling book, after writing many books without very much success. The second story is about a woman who goes to a small seaside town, where she meets a stranger with whom she achieves her lifetime ambition. And finally the third story is about how Jane’s life changes after she marries a younger man.

The Doll’s House and other stories

16 04 2008

Título: The Doll’s House and other stories

Autor: Katherine Mansfield

Editorial: Penguin

Obra adaptada: SI

Nivel: Intermedio

Reseña: All the stories of this book are based in values and all of them tell us about situations that could be real. The book is divided in four different stories and it isn’t very difficult at all to understand, although it might have some new words for you, depending on your level, but not too many.
I’ve liked especially The garden party because it represents something that, in my opinion, happens a lot of times in our current society.
I recommend reading this book; it’s amusing, easy to read and not too long. It can also make you think about people’s behaviour.

Reseña: Oliver Twist is an Orphan in the 19th century in England. At the orphanage, Oliver is expelled because of an act of rebellion -he asked for more food- so he escapes to London, where he works at an undertaker’s. There, he meets a gang of kids who give him food and teach him “games”. A few days later, Oliver will discover that his friends are actually pickpockets working for Fagin.
This book is easy to read, fast and entertaining. I think that most people may like this book because it is a classic tale.

Reseña: The story is about a little boy who doesn’t have any parents, so he has to live with a lot of kinds of people. Those people usually treat him badly.
In conclusion, the book is interesting but a bit tragic.
I recommend this book to people who don’t like reading because it is entertaining. I don’t like reading a lot but this I really enjoyed this book.
