Reseña: On Beauty is about an American family whose father is a University Professor, Howard Belsey, specialized in Rembrant. His wife is an activist Afro-American and their children are trying to live their own lives. Besides this, he has been unfaithful to his wife, so she has broken their marriage although they still live in the same house. He feels he is living the worst moment of his life. Apart from his difficult personal life, his colleague and rival about Rembrant, Monty kipps, has been invited to join the university staff.
In the book many characters are described and most of them have a special role. It´s difficult to understand some teenager expressions, because they use a kind of slang that many of us don’t know.
The book is quite boring sometimes, especially when the author, Zadie Smith, writes about the confrontation between Howard Belsey and Monty Kipps and their works about Rembrant. Anyway, Zadie Smith is, in my opinion, quite a good writer and personal conflicts and generational problemas are very well described.
