Autor: Sara Paretsky and others

Editorial: Penguin Active Reading

Obra adaptada: SI

Reseña: This book narrates seven different murder stories. Reading these, you’re going to be able to answer questions like: why does a person turn into a murderer? What reasons make a person kill someone? What’s the way detectives solve murders? Each story is narrated from a different point of view; through some of them you’re going to learn what a murderer thinks and how he acts, and in others you’re going to see what the detectives do to catch them. Read the book, I’m sure you won’t be able to put it down.

Our Mutual Friend

16 04 2008

Título: Our Mutual Friend

Autor: Charles Dickens

Editorial: Heinemann

Obra adaptada: SI

Nivel: Intermedio

Reseña: Our Mutual Friend is Charles Dickens’ last complete novel. In this book the author made a magnificent description of life in London during 1860. Two love stories marked by social tensions are used on the one hand to symbolize the power of love, capable to surpass the differences created by the class structure of the Victorian society and, on the other hand, to explain the fight between two men to conquer the heart of the same woman, which leads them to deceit, death and self-destruction.

Reseña: In this book we can find three different stories. The first story is about how a woman had the creative impulse to write her best-selling book, after writing many books without very much success. The second story is about a woman who goes to a small seaside town, where she meets a stranger with whom she achieves her lifetime ambition. And finally the third story is about how Jane’s life changes after she marries a younger man.

Autor: Katherine Mansfield

Editorial: Penguin

Obra adaptada: SI

Nivel: Intermedio

Reseña: All the stories of this book are based in values and all of them tell us about situations that could be real. The book is divided in four different stories and it isn’t very difficult at all to understand, although it might have some new words for you, depending on your level, but not too many.
I’ve liked especially The garden party because it represents something that, in my opinion, happens a lot of times in our current society.
I recommend reading this book; it’s amusing, easy to read and not too long. It can also make you think about people’s behaviour.

Reseña: Oliver Twist is an Orphan in the 19th century in England. At the orphanage, Oliver is expelled because of an act of rebellion -he asked for more food- so he escapes to London, where he works at an undertaker’s. There, he meets a gang of kids who give him food and teach him “games”. A few days later, Oliver will discover that his friends are actually pickpockets working for Fagin.
This book is easy to read, fast and entertaining. I think that most people may like this book because it is a classic tale.

Reseña: It is the love story of two couples. The girls, Jane and Elizabeth, are sisters and they live with their family comfortably although they are not very rich. The boys, Mr Bingley and Mr Darcy, are close friends, and both of them belong to the upper class. Bingley is a gentleman and Darcy belongs to the nobility.
The two couples fall in love, but the social differences, the pride, and the prejudice make the success of their love difficult.

Autor: H.G.Wells

Editorial: Penguin Readers

Obra adaptada: SI

Nivel: Intermedio

Reseña: This book is about a scientist who lived at the 20nd century. This man invented a machine which let him travel through the time.
With the intention of getting to know the future of the human race, he travelled to the year 802,701.
He expected to find a better world with a developed society. Instead, he found a primitive world where two opposite races lived. One of these lived at the surface and its population danced and sang and wore flowers. And the other one lived in the dark depth or earth.
On this enviroment, the scientist lived a lot of exciting adventures.
I liked it and I recommend you this book if you like adventure books and fantastic stories.
