La strada che va in città

Titolo: La strada che va in città

Autore: Natalia Ginzburg

Editoriale: Einaudi

Livello: Avanzato

The Grass is Singing is a novel about the problem white people always have had with black people. It tells the story of a married couple who had a difficult and poor life in Africa. The main characters are:

-Dick Turner: a poor white African farmer who married Mary and whose dream was to marry and have childern.

-Mary Turner: a secretary in an office in the town who married Dick and moved to the farm.

-Moses: a black man who worked for Mr Turner in the fields and later in his house as a servant.

At first, Mary wasn´t able to fit in with the lifestyle in the farm. It reminded her of the poverty and the problems her family had had and she was filled with horror. She felt unhappy and bored and treated the natives, who worked as servants for her, badly. But everything changed when Moses arrived at the house. He wasn´t a simple servant as the rest. Mary had hit him with a whip in the fields, so Moses wanted revenge and waited patiently. He won power over her and she was confused; she found him attractive but she was also afraid of him. Finally, she sent him away, and one night he killed her. He didn´t want to escape from the police. After all, the trial suggested that he had murdered her in search for money and jewellery. They couldn´t admit that a white woman could have a relationship, good or evil, with a black man.

The story makes you think about society in the past and the differences between white and black people and rich and poor ones. It´s incredible, looking back, that nowadays the USA President is a black person and that society has changed so much, fortunately.

Reseña:

Last week I read “The grass is singing”, a good book written by Doris Lessing. The story takes place in Africa in a farm far from anyone. The characters are a couple (Mary and Dick Turner) and the houseboy (Moses). When she gets married to Dick and they start living together in his home, she feels bored and unhappy because she prefers life in the city. First, she hates farm life and the natives who work in her husband´s fields, but when Moses appears she changes her mind because she falls in love with him. I liked the book and it was easy to read, but I would change the first chapter, because it tells the end of the story (Moses kills Mary).

Reseña: The Grass is Singing is a brilliant book written by Doris Lessing, winner of the 2007 Nobel Prize for Literature. It was her first novel and an astonishing success in USA and Britain. It came to the screen in the dramatic and provocative movie: “Killing Heat”.

The story takes place in South Africa in 1940, when the whites were in control. The book tells us about the difficult and painful life of a white woman in an African farm miles away from anyone. It shows how Mary, the main character, is driven slowly crazy by heat, loneliness and poverty and how her sad life finishes with her murder by a black servant.

From my point of view, this book is both entertaining and worth-reading. What I found most interesting is the change of Mary´s feelings from disappointment to madness. Chapter 5 - when Mary, who was sick and tired of living in the farm, decided to go back to her life in the town - was absolutely thrilling. She wrongly thought that everything could be better.

I would recommend it as a gripping book for those who enjoy sensitive stories with unforgettable characters. It was easy to read and understand. The writer tells us a traditional story in simple language.  A perfect book for a long journey!

Reseña:

It was published in 1950 and it is Doris Lessing’s first novel. The story takes place in Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) in South Africa in the late 1940s. It is both a historical novel and love story; The Grass is Singing is a powerful psychological study of an unhappy woman and her marriage. But at the same time, Doris Lessing draws a picture of Rhodesian society; she shows us how badly many white people treated black people during that period through the story of The Turners. The plot is centered around the Turners’ life and how the poverty and their way of life change their personality. The heroine Mary, falls obsessively in love with her black houseboy, Moses. She treats him cruelly, as she treats all Africans. The story ends with Mary’s madness and murder.

From my point of view, the book is really entertaining. It is so gripping that I couldn’t put it down. The most entertaining chapter is number two, when the narrator tells about the moment  Mary and Dick met each other.I think it is easy to understand and the language was not too difficult; the book is highly recommendable. I would like to recommend it to people who like novels and complicated and temperamental characters.

Reseña: The Grass is Singing was written by Doris Lessing in 1950. It was her first novel and it is set in Southern Africa, in a poor village in Rhodesia.
I liked it very much because it’s not only a story, a sad story, but a racial critic as well. Through the novel you can learn about the relations between the black and white population in that country.
