Useful Tips

  • DON´T JUST READ THE DEFINITION OR FIRST MEANING: you should also look for other possible meanings or definitions; many words have more than one meaning.
  • FIND OUT THE PART OF SPEECH IT IS: sometimes the same word belongs to more than one word class; for example the word ’jet’ can be a noun and a verb.
  • CHECK THE PRONUNCIATION AND SPELLING: English is not phonetic, you cannot always look at an English word and know how to say it, you cannot always hear an English word and know how to spell it.
  • WHAT´S THE PRONUNCIATION AND MEANING OF THESE WORDS: row, wind, dessert and bow?

Hi Cristina. I have just looked up many words in the online dictionary. Now I know how to do it. Once again thank you very much, and thanks to all the people in class for allowing me to ask about my problem with the dictionary. Have a nice weekend!!
