Report of our stay in Gijón
Day 1 - Wednesday
It was a long day and everyone was excited, as we had to stay awake till 3 o´clock at night and then drove to Stuttgart.
From Stuttgart we took a flight to Mallorca and from Mallorca airport we flew to Oviedo. The flights were great, nice weather and everybody was in a good mood. After we arrived in Oviedo, Blanca, the teacher of the Spanish students, welcomed us and we took a bus to Gijón where we met our exchange partners.
After arriving in Gijón we went to the school, called “I.E.S. Mata Jove”. The students prepared a Spanish snack for us and we were all very nervous. We talked for the first time with our exchange partners and the first impression was great!
Then we went to the assembly hall, where some students from Gijón presented a little show, e.g. with bagpipes and presentations.
After this show we went to our host-families for lunch. It was great to meet the families and they were all very kind. We tried to get to know each other better.
In the afternoon we went to a museum of modern art by bus.
After the visit of the museum we went to the university: La Laboral. This was a very nice and beautiful place.
In the evening we went to a bar to have fun and drink cidre, it’s a typical drink of Asturias.
All in all it was an exhausting, but very nice and exciting day.

Day 2 - Thursday
At 8.30 am we met at the school. We went to the assembly hall where we talked about our region, the black forest and our home town, Schwenningen. We showed the Spanish students some pictures of the animals, the landscape and the traditional clothes here. After that we sang songs and read our stories about the future. We had very much fun!
At 10.30 am we went to the Ateneo. It’s the cultural centre of the area. It is a very big building. There is nearly everything there, for example a library and a theatre, which the school sometimes uses. Last year they used it for the Comenius project and it’s free of charge. There were also some working rooms, a music room for the choir and a little kitchen. And there was a city council to help for example when people have problems. That day we saw an exhibition of a deceased artist named Rafael Alberti. In front of the building there was a book fair because it was the day of the book.
After that we went to the beach. It was very beautiful and big. There we had a little break and we could enjoy the view and the nice weather. Then we walked back to the school where we played Asturian games. It was very funny and you needed much luck to win these games.
At 2.30 pm we went back to our host families for lunch.
At 5 pm we met again at school to learn some Spanish dances like flamenco. The flamenco teachers were very nice. We also taught the Spanish students to dance some German dances like ‘Walzer’ and ‘Diskofox’. We had a lot of fun together!
Later on some of us went to a football game; others went to their host families for dinner. It was a very exhausting day, but all in all it was exciting and we enjoyed it a lot!

Day 3 - Friday
Like every day we met at the Mata Jove School in the morning and then we started our trip to the centre of Gijón by bus. The weather was very nice and we visited the harbour, the old city centre and went along the cliffs with the famous sign of Gijón, the “Elogio del Horizonte” – “Praise to the Horizon”, where we had a wonderful view onto the sea.
Finally, some of us had a great deja-vu; a town hall, a debating room, microphones, leather arm chairs… but it was a relief to us when we realized that we were just introduced to the politics of Gijón and didn’t have to make another great debate like in Paris before.
At last our guide suggested us to build some paper town halls on our own at home and handed us over the patterns, but we didn’t really feel like doing that.
The children in front of the city council were very excited to see some “real” Germans.
Then we decided to have a pizza in a restaurant. After a small break our trip went on and we went to Oviedo by train. Although Oviedo is much smaller than Gijón, it is the capital of Asturias. We walked through the city and visited several sights.
Finally we finished our trip and went home quite tired. But our exhaustion passed quickly and didn’t prevent us from going out at night with our exchange partners.

Day 4 – Saturday
The last complete day of our great stay in Gijón. We all had to get up really early, because a long day in the mountains was about to start. We all started it with a little sleep in the bus, but not really long, because after one hour we suddenly stopped, as the engine didn’t work anymore. So we had to walk the rest, through the really cliffy area where a herd of (extremely aggressive) cows passed our way.
Then we hiked through the mountains to see the famous lakes, but unfortunately it started to rain. We walked back to the bus… Our bus driver (a woman with a very specific sense of fashion!) repaired the car or better looked at the problem.
The next point on the program was a visit to Covadonga, a very Christian place with a beautiful cathedral and a cave where the virgin Covadonga appeared once. From this place the Reconquista was apparently started by Pelayo, the Asturian hero.
At this stage we felt like going back to Gijón, because we were a bit tired and it was raining, but we decided to make a stop on a lay-by to eat a bit of the food that our host-mothers had prepared for us.
At last we went by bus to Cangas de Onís, to the Roman Bridge. We walked around a bit, but it was so rainy that we decided to sit in a café and drink something. After the great program we went back to Gijón. Most of us went back to the host families and prepared ourselves for a long, last evening… At last there is one thing we would like to mention: It was a great exchange and we all liked it a lot!

Day 5 - Sunday
Now it was time to say good-bye, not nice at all!
Dear Spanish friends!
We want to say thank you once again for your hospitality and kindness. We had a wonderful time with you that we’ll never forget. We really hope to see you again one day, hopefully in Schwenningen!
