I am moving…

Posted by CRISTINA CABAL DIAZ under General
It’s time to move on, time to get going
What lies ahead, I have no way of knowing
But under my feet, baby, grass is growing
It’s time to move on, it’s time to get going

… I’m moving !! .. and  in more than one sense . After 15 years teaching in La Fleguera I am moving to Avilés and although those who know me are well aware  this is what I had been praying for ,for as long as I’ve been in the teaching business ,I cannot bring myself to feel completely happy. I know I’ll be missing a lot of things. . Thanks to you all who have been with me at some point or other  in my career. I’ll miss you all!

Virtually, you’ll find me here as I’ll also be moving this  blog of mine into a new one ,where blog and web will be together. To everybody who’s added me to their blogroll I hope you’ll want to do the change and add the new address for El Blog de Cristina  to your blogrolls. Thanks for your support this far, I hope I’ll see you around at my new site . This blog will no longer be updated

Becoming a Housewife

Posted by CRISTINA CABAL DIAZ under General

Now dear reader , you might be wondering why I haven’t dedicated a single minute to this blog of mine. The truth be told , I felt I needed a break from the computer and from teaching , never from English… I’m addicted!!!
But …One important event has happened in my life… my maid has resigned after 11 years working at home. Yes, I know what you are thinking… !!! Just save it, …I’m not interested in the irony!! The thing is that after so many years I had forgotten the basic things a person has to do to be able to survive.. and although it’s true that I was an expert at baking desserts, the sad thing was that I didn’t know how to cook ordinary lentils, among other things.
So, after a few burns from ironing, salty dishes hardly edible, plus mixing bleach with ammonia and almost …etc… I’m sure you are not interested in my misfortune… but there are some positive things about me having to become a housewife.. now I’m more independent!!
If you have never ironed a fitted sheet you might encounter , as I certainly did, some problems ironing and folding it properly …quite a difficult chore if you think about it! The solution to my domestic problems….. the Mighty You Tube. Have a look at these videos and learn what I am now an expert at.

How to fold a fitted sheet

My children also had to learn how to fold their T shirts neatly. Interesting video and also great fun for children

Speed-peel potatoes … when in a hurry

and so on and so forth…..  but…. I don’t like being a housewife , I like being a teacher…and just that!!! Carmen, please come back!!!! I miss uuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu!!!!!

Football and football!

Posted by CRISTINA CABAL DIAZ under General, Resources

I sometimes wonder how I can get so involved in something I’ve never liked. And I’m talking about football. I’ve gone a long way from not knowing how many players you needed to play a match to watching , if nothing else appeals to me on TV, the match between South Africa and USA national teams ,to name just one.

It must be love! This is what I’ve done to celebrate the promotion of  Villa de Pravia football team ,where my son plays, to the second division . I hope you like it !!

Food for Thought

Posted by CRISTINA CABAL DIAZ under General, Listening
I have just received this email from a colleague and I have felt the urge to share it with you although you have probably seen it or heard about it. It has certainly made a deep impression on me… suffice to say that I couldn’t help crying. I am not ashamed of it but I would be  if it hadn’t stirred me in some way or other.
We live in the First World surrounded by luxury and superfluous things. We only care about our present even though we are  all well aware of the consequences of all our excesses but we feel no remorse by thinking that all these hot issues should be discussed and dealt with somewhere else and by politicians . We always think we can do nothing and we keep on living , putting the blame on others when we see wars, famine and  destruction  and then , we listen to this 13-year-old girl and realize that we could do something only if we wanted to.  Watch the 7:53 minutes ; it is worth it.
I want a world for my children and for my grandchildren but also for my great-great…and all the generations to come. Don’t you want the same?

And the Oscar goes to…

Posted by CRISTINA CABAL DIAZ under General
Penelope Cruz won an Academy Award on Sunday for her supporting role as a fiery, funny woman in a three-way relationship with her ex-husband and an American woman in the Woody Allen film “Vicky Cristina Barcelona. She is the first Spanish woman to win an acting Oscar.
Breathless and tearful, Penelope warned Oscar producers her acceptance speech was “not going to be 45 seconds” before asking: “Has anybody ever fainted here? Because I might be the first one.”
Cruz delivered part of her acceptance speech in Spanish, saying that the win was for all the actors from her home country.

“I grew up in a place called Alcobendas, where this was not a very realistic dream,” Cruz said.

Congartulations Pe , you probably deserve it!!!
Did you know that the film was shot in Oviedo and Avilés?

No more James Dean /james dean/

The problem with English names  is that you can never be sure how to pronounce them unless you have heard them before.
The thing is that I always find myself under great pressure when I have to figure out how to pronounce an English name. People assume that just because you have some knowledge of English you are supposed to know how to pronounce every single name they come across. What they don’t seem to know is that there are no pronunciation rules ,in English , you can rely on and  that there are lots of English personal and place names whose pronunciations are counter-intuitive to their spelling.
How are you supposed to guess that  a name such as Happisburgh, is pronounced /heizbr∂/, for God’s sake! I would  have never guessed it!
I remember some years ago I took a course in a place called Hastings (like the battle) in South West England . Before leaving for England I carefully checked how to pronounce the name   /heistinz/  but when I took  a taxi to take me to this vilage, to my dismay , the taxi driver pronounced the name as  /hi:stinz/  and then after some time in the village I realised that the name could be pronounced in several different ways.
Anyway, here is a list of film stars whose names are frequently mispronounced: no more James Dean  /james dean/,  if avoidable.
Fred Astaire

Dan Aykroyd

… and ready to see you on Monday, although I very much doubt you would like to see me with the same level of enthusiasm  considering all the exams I am about to give you.

This is my plan:
Monday: Listening and Reading
Wednesday: Writing and Speaking
Thursday: Speaking
Anyway,I am aware that some of you might have problems to fit in on one of these days but I am in the right mood to be flexible, so do not worry; we will work something out within this same  week. You see, I need to have your marks in SAUCE before Christmas.
