I saw you last month

I bought this two years ago

I did it yesterday

  • To talk about/narrate things like in a story:

I woke up yesterday and then I went to school. Then, I started my lessons and when I finished i went home.

  • In contrast with the past progressive, to say that something was happening and then something else interrupted it

I was watching TV (1st action) when the phone rang(=past simple, interruption)
