Time for English

Un nuevo blog en Educastur

Last term we exchanged language assistants with other schools in Asturias so that our students had the chance to learn about other English speaking countries and their way of life. Here you can see a summary of the activity and the presentations we could watch. Enjoy it!

Flash fiction is a style of fictional literature of extreme brevity. There is no accepted definition of the length of the category and it is known with many different names: micro fiction, micro narrative, micro-story, postcard fiction, short short, short short story, and sudden fiction.

The students in 1º BTO have created their own examples of Flash Fiction and we must say that with a wonderful results. Here they are: 1 / 2

A limerick is a short, humorous poem of five lines with a strict rhyme scheme (AABBA). The first line traditionally introduces a person and a place, with the place appearing at the end of the first line and establishing the rhyme scheme for the second and fifth lines.

The form can be found in England as of the early years of the 18th century. It was popularized by Edward Lear in the 19th century, although he did not use the term.

The origin of the name limerick for this type of poem is debated, but it is generally taken to be a reference to the City or County of Limerick in Ireland.

Here are some examples written by our students:

There was a guy in a town

that never dared to look downguy-in-town.jpg

He never cared about what people said

Because of that one day he fell

The poor guy who fell down in town.

Catarina A. Patricio (3º ESO)

She doesn’t want more,alicia.jpg

She just wanted to be on the shore,

How say to her that this is a dream,

Without that she scream,

She wants it to be over any more.

Aída Ruíz (3º ESO)

Valentine’s Contest

Last February, 14th we celebrated Valentine’s Day, so we organised a Writing Contest in which our students could participate with love letters or other romantic texts. The winner was the student of 4º ESO, Samuel Ruibal Rosón. Here is his text:

Let me show you something, let me say to you all those things that I’ve been keeping inside for years… Years drowned under seas of tears, nights looking at the sky and asking to everyone: where are you, dear? Are you swimming inside clouds, learning how to live running behind your dreams? And your shadow… It’s the only one that still talks to me, because

I remember those days in which we were hugging each other, being slaves of our hearts, kissing for every star we saw inside the soul we made together. That’s the only reason why I’m still here, the memories of our sunrise becoming a smile, the moonlight of that light you keep doing in the present… I’m just waiting for you, for your happiness to make your eyes shine like in the past. I miss you so much that I’m about to die every second I walk without you, but I also think that my love keeps me waiting for you.

How can I explain my easy and complicated feelings? No gods can do it, no presidents, no time, no experience, no words… Just you, the unic thing I see, drawing black hearts on every mirror, on every wall, on my face… Just you, leading my fingers, making their moves, playing the music I hear when the silence is quiet, intense and rude. Just you and your butterfly flying like an angel in the night.

There was also another section for Valentine Cards. Here we had several winners, depending on their ages: in ESO we had a first and second prize (Alfonso Trapiella, from 1º ESO, and Rebeca Jiménez, from 2º ESO). There was another prize for Bachillerato, which was awarded to AnaGabriela Acevedo.
