The SmithsThe Smiths were a major discovery for me when I was a freshman at university. I remember the first time I listened to this song with a friend of mine. I fell in love with their music and Morrissey’s original lyrics and unique voice. I’m talking about 1984; we didn’t have the Internet back then so we couldn’t see any videos of our favourite singers every time we wanted, and every night we tuned to “Expreso de medianoche”, a very popular radio show in Asturias at the time to get the chance to stay updated on the latest music.

Thanks to Morrissey and The Smiths and so many other British bands of the 80s, we learned tons of English. Whenever I remember the good times I had at college, The Smiths come to mind inevitably.

I hope you enjoy Heaven knows I’m miserable now.  The Smiths split up a long time ago, but Morrissey has continued his solo career with ups and downs, and for the last few years he has gained a new and younger audience. Definitely, he hasn’t lost his unique way of singing and his talent for good lyrics.

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows i’m miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I’m miserable now
In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don’t care if I live or die ?
Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I’m miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I’m miserable now
In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don’t care if I live or die ?
What she asked of me at the end of the day
Caligula would have blushed
“oh, you’ve been in the house too long” she said
And I naturally fled
In my life
Why do I smile
At people who I’d much rather kick in the eye ?
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I’m miserable now
“oh, you’ve been in the house too long” she said
And I naturally fled
In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don’t care if I live or die?
