More soul: Marvin Gaye

It seems soul music has me under its spell for the weekend, and what would soul be without Marvin Gaye? It is generally acknowledged that his 1971 album What’s going on?  proved he could write and produce his own music outside the Motown system, thus paving the way for the later successses of self-sufficient singers-writers-producers in African American music.

Otis Redding
I like all kinds of music, but I must admit I have a soft spot for black soul singers. I’m talking about the classics, that is, geniuses such as Otis Redding, Marvin Gaye, Aretha Franklin, you know, the whole lot. Today I’d like you to learn something about the first one in my list, who tragically died when he was only 26 years of age.
