Gary Jules

We have a long, long weekend ahead of us and since I know you enjoy me posting songs on this site, here goes another one. It is called Mad World. The original version was written and sung by 80s band Tears for Fears, but it was made really popular when American singer-songwriter Gary Jules recorded it together with friend Michael Andrews for the movie Donnie Darko. This song became the UK Christmas Number One single of 2003 and since then it has been used on popular American TV shows, and most recently in the commercial for the Xbox 360 game Gears of War (From Wikipedia).

I love the lyrics and the video that was shot after the song became popular thanks to Jules’ cover. A lot of music videos these days just try to impress the viewer with unnecessary use of digital effects and all kinds of gimmicks. That is why I love the simplicity of the kids making animated figures on the sidewalk seen from above.

If you enjoy this song, I suggest you visit Gary Jules’ website, in which you can access some complete tracks from different albums. It’s simple, peaceful music; lovely to put up your feet and relax to it.

Your exercise today is to listen carefully for certain lines which are not correct at all. Can you find them?

All around me are peculiar traces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going somewhere, going somewhere
And their tears are filling up their classes
No expression, no expression
Hide my head I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of bad
The dreams in which I’m lying
Are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people go to the circus
It’s a very, very
Mad world

Children waiting for the day they’ll feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
And they feel the way that every child should
Sit and be quiet, sit and be quiet
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what’s my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which Im dying
Are the best I’ve ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people sprain their ankles
It’s a very, very
Mad world
