Achinoam Nini, also known by her professional name Noa, is Israel’s leading international concert and recording artist. Born in Tel Aviv in 1969 Noa lived in New York City from age 2 and attended SAR Academy primary school, and remained there until her return to Israel alone at the age of 17. Her family is originally from Yemen.
Noa’s music is most prominently influenced by the singer-songwriters of the 60s, such as Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell, Barbra Streisand and Leonard Cohen. These musical and lyrical sensibilities, combined with Noa’s Yemenite roots and Gil Dor’s strong background in jazz, classical, country and rock, have created Noa and Gil Dor’s unique sound (From Wikipedia).
She has recently released her latest album called Genes & Jeans (note for my students: both words are pronounced the same way), and this is what Noa had to say about it:
‘This album was born from my wish to seek and revive the Yemenite songs I heard from my grandmother as a child. I listened to endless amazing singers, from Aharon Amram, Zion Golan, Shoshana Damari, Shlomo Dachyani and Miriam Tzafri to Avner Gadasi and Ofra Chaza. The beautiful melodies and wonderful voices touched me deeply and humbled me greatly, though none as much as grandma Rachel’s… she is number one, all 4 feet of her. It was clear to me that a girl born in Israel and raised in New York, where the Yemenite songs faded and were replaced by Joni mitchell and Paul Simon, would have to find her own way to connect to that rich place called Root…’
I have chosen the song Waltz to the road from her latest album to share with you today. If you feel like it, you can also do some reading and listening practice about this superb singer.

I´ve seen Noa in tv recently more than once, so I see she´s being pretty appreciated by now, which makes me happy, for as long as she appears to be a very profound and serious, honest and full of good person I feel like possibly society is “taking what is lacking” by holding to her hand, so I feel relieved, optimistic and therefore, perhaps safe
I think this is a beuatiful song. You can feel that the music and the lyrics, both of them, tell you a story. The song raises your heart. Noa’s voice is clear, sweet and nostalgic.I think that she gives us an incredible example of mixture of influences, and it’s original and different from what we are accustomed to listening to.
For me this blog is a good oportunity to discover singers who are very interesting.
They are beautiful songs, really, I have just decided to buy this record …I think lyrics are just poetry, and I can feel it like the wind on the desert. It´s very nice , sure.
The exercise about this music, is fun, I could be listening to it for hours
I have to recognize I didn’t almost Know anything about this amazing israelian singer. After having readed and listened about her, I am aware of her great sensitivity. It is neccessary to flater her work capacity to become a multicultural artist. On the other hand, it is a known true the fact of the women discrimiation in Israel. Noa, has been a woman who has overcomed all this kind of sexist problems. She has to be a model for all of us. Speaking about her success and concerts, it is evident that people love her voice and her music.
In my particular case, my hearing follows other ways. What can I do?… Only say to Noa: Carry on whit your experimentation, may be some day you will capture my heart!.

Hi Javier,
I think this is a really nice song. I have to confess that I’ve never heard anything about this singer although it’s nothing odd if you know a little about me and music. Anyway, while I was listening to Noa I was feeling the warm of her voice, the sound of the music that have made me feel quiet and relaxed, that obsessive rhythm that sounds along the full melody making circles inside my head… I think that if you pay attention you can smell the spices of a little market in a wherever sunny place.
You know that after listening to some kind of music I wish to drink a bottle of beer, but this song has filled my mouth with the flavour of the red wine.
Angel.
