Another song challenge

Posted by ricardogm under General

This is a song  from the great Janis Joplin, recorded just two days before she died, and included in the posthumous Pearl album. She sang it a capella, so you can enjoy her impressing voice without distractions. But… where is the challenge? It’s very simple. The lyrics of the song are pretty clear (and quite a bit ironic), but the second verse is not so easy to understand. This is the challenge. What does she mean with “dialing for dollars”? Bye

Propa..what?

Well, this is a really tough song contest, maybe impossible. The thing is that I know a song with many, many of these proparoxytone things. I don´t know if there’s one with more, but mine is pretty famous. What does proparoxytone mean? Well, it’s a contest, find it out for yourself.

Hints: the song is old, the title has one proparoxytone,  it sold more than a million copies…

And the answer is… quite logical:

When I was young, it seemed that life was so wonderful,
A miracle, oh it was beautiful, magical.
And all the birds in the trees, well they’d be singing so happily,
Joyfully, playfully watching me.
But then they send me away to teach me how to be sensible,
Logical, responsible, practical.
And they showed me a world where I could be so dependable,
Clinical, intellectual, cynical.

There are times when all the world’s asleep,
The questions run too deep
For such a simple man.
Won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am.

Now watch what you say or they’ll be calling you a radical,
Liberal, fanatical, criminal.
Won’t you sign up your name, we’d like to feel you’re
Acceptable, respectable, presentable, a vegetable!

At night, when all the world’s asleep,
The questions run so deep
For such a simple man.
Won’t you please, please tell me what we’ve learned
I know it sounds absurd
But please tell me who I am.
