8 a.m. classes, 18 credits, homework, projects, part-time job…you know how it goes. At the end of the day, all you want to do is go back to your room and relax some with some popcorn and Netflix. Sometimes your room can get so messy that it’s hard to unwind because last week’s pizza is staring at you from its corner begging to be brought out and is distracting you from finishing your essay that’s due in the morning. Having such a busy schedule makes it hard to keep your things organized, but we forget how much having a clean environment can affect our lives for the better. When you bring feng shui into your room, you’ll notice a big change in your personality and your grades.

Eliminate clutter

Most students find this one to be really difficult, but having a really cluttered room takes a toll on you. Dirty socks and Biology textbooks tossed on the floor and left for days gives off a sticky energy that no one enjoys. Make sure to not overly clear your things though; having your room look as it’s someone’s home and that there’s life there is a big part of what makes a room comfortable and appealing. It’s a similar concept to the idea that we need at least a little socialization and company in our lives to really be happy, but being around too many people can start to be overwhelming. It’ll help you keep those headaches away and you’ll be surprised how much lighter you feel when your room is open and more organized.

Have your desk directed toward your door

Working facing away from an entrance can be stressful on your body because it makes your subconscious feel that you’re in a vulnerable position. Most dorms have desks attached to the wall, so you’re not able to physically move it in a different direction. To compromise, put a mirror above your desk in a position that lets you be able to see the door while you’re studying. You’ll be surprised how much more powerful you feel, and your studying will be much more effective.

Plants, plants, plants!

Plants represent nature, creativity, and most importantly, growth. Plus, they really help even out the atmosphere if you have a lot of electronics in your room. These should add to your life, not feel like a burden. Pick plants that you can manage with your schedule. Cacti are perfect for a college lifestyle; you can probably guess why.

Put decoration higher up on your walls

It was pointed out to me as a kid that looking down or having your head lowered can be really stressful on both your mind and body. Fortunately, art is the perfect fix for that. The attention-grabbing nature of decorations will encourage you to keep your head up, mentally and physically. Lifting your art will lift your spirit and your grades.
