Global warming, as we know it, is the gradual increase in the earth’s surface temperature produced by Natural climate variability which is caused by solar activity, volcanic emissions and variations in the earth’s orbit, and the increasing greenhouse effect due to human activity.

The predicted effects are numerous, especially reductions in the ozone layer, species extinction, sea level rise, spread of diseases and extreme weather events such as floods, droughts, hurricanes or tsunamis. Trying to prevent it, most Governments have signed the Kyoto Protocol in order to combat greenhouse gas emissions, except for the United States, because of possible negative effects on the economy.

Although it has turned into a controversial issue, without doubt it is the most important problem that world has ever faced. Most of us agree that we are doing nothing because we don’t really think about risks of increasing greenhouse gas emissions and, as some of my mates say, we will probably realise too late.

So what can we do? Not much, as Paola says, because it is impossible to fight against big companies and governments’ pigheadedness who are the main responsible for giving priority to their economic interests. However, everything isn’t lost, as Alberto adds, there are many things we can do for reducing somehow harmful effects: recycling, using less heat and air conditioning, replacing regular light bulbs with compact fluorescent light bulbs, driving less, taking the bus, going cycling or just walking, using less hot water, turning off lights when you leave a room using only as much light as we need…

One thing is sure, this is a problem that concern us and we can’t ignore what it happens. It‘s time we listened to the scientifics’ advice and respected the environment so let’s get our act together and become part of the solution.
