Neighbours from Tenerife reported the noise that the carnival produces during this public holiday. The Carnival’s programme, which was 25 days long, included lots of musical festivals after ten o’clock in the evening most of the days and bring together thousands people from everywhere in Spain and from other countries. Neighbours alleged that the noise went beyond 55 decibels (the legal highest point of noise), and consequently, they couldn’t stay in their homes during the holiday. The mayor of Tenerife, who was absolutely angry, said that the neighbours´ request had mutilated the 200 years-old party, a party that is part of Canaries identity.

That topic has made different an opposite reactions between my classmates.

In the first place, some of them alleged that Carnival is an ancestral tradition so it shouldn’t be banned. Secondly, the money that the carnival provides to Tenerife is an important point to consider. Carnival is the celebration that reaches the most important amount of tourist to Tenerife. In those days hotels have no vacancies, bars and restaurants are full of people who waste money and money there. Last but not least, banning Carnival could set a dangerous precedent for neighbours from others cities who suffer the noise from Fallas, San Fermin or other traditional parties.

On the other hand, few people said that is understandable the neighbours position. Nowadays, Carnival involves thousands of people from everywhere of Spain and other countries spending the night outside, making noise and listening to music in the middle of the street until 4 or 5 in the morning.

Those people alleged that it is not easy to combine the noise with the necessity of sleep properly to go to work refreshed, especially if the orchestras use powerful loudspeakers. One way to tackle the problem might be to move Carnival to the city outskirts to a non-residential area.

To sum up, the Carnival controversy has a very difficult solution, and I’m sure that next year the debate will be opened again.
