The motion for debate proposed by Lucía was clear and controversial: should the government ban bullfights? It seems there are different opinions about this topic, as well as, of course, arguments for and against the hypothetical law. First of all, the author remarks the fact that several political authorities are asking to forbid bullfighting in Catalonia because of the cruelty of the show, and how people enjoy watching an animal suffer the way they do. They propose to imitate the Portuguese style, which doesn’t kill the bull during the show. On the other side, there are associations that counter these opinions by saying the bull doesn’t suffer, as a recent research from the Complutense University in Madrid has confirmed.

Since we live in Spain, which is worldwide known because of bullfighting, it was expected to read different opinions or, at least, some supporters. But the unanimity of the comments demonstrates that this is a barbaric, “out of fashion” tradition. Rebeca made an interesting point when she wrote about the research done which said bulls didn’t suffer thanks to their hormonal system. She compared the situation to a similar one where, instead of the bull, it was your dog the one who was about to die, while being humiliated in front of thousands of people. Javier Villallana agreed with her, exposing it was an outdated and bloody show. In addition, Lucía and Alberto argued their discord with bullfighting, as well as mentioned other traditions which are also deplorable (from their point of view), as the “running of the bulls”(”Encierros”).

From there on, all the opinions were very similar; in fact, the only discussion there was had been originated by a misunderstanding (or miswriting) of the text written by Lucía, who said society advance consisted in overcoming old traditions, who was referring just to bullfighting and cruel traditions, not the normal ones. After the row was solved (or left out) it was clear everybody agreed, and the debate led to a conclusion: this cruel, bloody and barbaric tradition should be modified or banned, but it has such an economic and tourist importance it would affect our country too much. Maybe this is why this tradition is still allowed.
