Motion for debate: Are we doing enough to stop global warming?

Proposed by Nuria Lagunas

global-warming.JPGGlobal warming is an increase in the average temperature of the Earth’s near-surface air and oceans. Although global warming has occurred in the past, the term is most often used to refer to the warming some scientists predict will occur as a result of increased emissions of greenhouse gases.

Recent articles in the press have reported that our weather is becoming more and more extreme and more destructive. The effects:

What can we do?

What SHOULD we do?

Climate change is having an effect worldwide.there is Also a huge amount of animals that suffer from Global warming as for istance:Polar bears,or seals who appear to be affected at present.
It could be useful too to motivate youngsters to take part on the movement to stop global warming . We do need to help save our Planet, our grandchildren or great grandchildren should have the opportunity to experience the wonderful animals and landscapes that are becoming endangered.

2. Javier Villares Cantón - 27 March 2007

Who cares global warming! Many big businesses/corporations lobby hard for technologies that causes warming, even many countries are against changes in the laws to stop global warming because they earn a lot with the present technologies. Morover there are geostrategic points concerning western countries which are, in fact, who write down the rules.

I’m in favour of doing our best to stop global warming, but we can only fight with the weapons others give us, and those weapons are very few.

3. Nuria Lagunas Garcia - 28 March 2007

Of course, Javier, I agree with you. We are not doing anything to stop this situation and I’ve started to think that life here is near to the end. Maybe my words are awful but think for a moment: all we have works with these polluting energies. could we live without all these things?.It’s hardly impossible to change things if they don’t change their minds. We can make it alone, and they have the power and the solutions, but these solutions won’t give them a lot of money.
In my view, climate change is the most severe problem that we are facing today more serious even than the threat of terrorism.

4. Rebeca Arévalo - 2 April 2007

Of course we’re doing nothing to stop global warming. In my opinion the point is that we’re not really conscious of how the world will be if the temperature raises more than 5ºC or if the ice in the poles melts completely. We know that it would be an environmental tragedy, but… What’s wrong if we can keep on doing the same things as every day? No matter. A short – sleeved shirt, and that’s all, continue destroying your own planet and wasting energy.

5. Alberto Pérez Meléndez - 5 April 2007

Javier, I agree with you with the issue that many countries are against to stop global warming but I don´t agree at all with the last part of your comment.
There are a great amount ot things we can try to stop global warming or at least to reduce its effects such as:recycle all of our home´s waste newsprint, glass or metal, turn down the water heater thermostat(120º are hot enough), or also try to leave your car at home two days at week, instead of it we can try walk, bike or public transport. What do you think about it?

6. Javier Villallana - 8 April 2007

Global warmimg is the most important issue that needs to be addressed today. There are many other problems/issues that need to be addressed in Spain and around the world, but if global warming is not addressed first and foremost, where will we be 20, 50, 100 years from now? We are talking about the survival of the planet people..!! So as Alberto so correctly points out, start doing your share to help with this urgent problem: change a light, recycle more, drive less, use less hot water, avoid products with a lot of packaging, plant a tree and much more…, and become part of the solution! 7. Rebeca Arévalo - 11 April 2007

The most important thing to avoid climate change in the future is to realise that it is affecting us nowadays. We can see it in the changeable weather (it snows in spring…), in the phenomenons recently produced such us earthquakes or tornados… And all of these things will get worse if we don’t act from now.

8. Ana San José - 18 April 2007

We are doing nothing to stop global warming and when we will notice its effects it will be too late to do something.

Some of the things that not too late we will notice are: Increase of the temperature, what will thaw icebergs, shores will be inunded by the increase of sea, so land would be smaller; and even desertic places will be warmer, and some animals and plants destroyed….

but I also think that human being is set aside for destroing the world, we abuse of its sources, and this won`t have a happy ending.

If we don’t change our attitude soon, things will get worse.

9. Sandra López - 21 April 2007

I think that everybody try to take part in solving the problem when we are in touch with the reality, and overall int he moment that people told us about the problems, but when we return to our routine we forget all these problems:We need more mentalization on television, internet and in our lives

10. Francisco Javier Fernández García, 5ºD - 26 April 2007

Global warming seems to be a serious problem but too many people still don´t believe it. It is reported that in 2020 tourists will prefer Baltic Sea (North of Europe) rather than Mediterranean Sea because of the rise of temperatures, and everybody knows that tourism is very important in the South of Spain.

11. Daniel - 28 April 2007

The problem with globlal warming is the same as with many others the disgusting money. Every day I hate more money. But the worst thing is they are pulling us´s leg. Because it´s quite fashionable to say you are ecologist and trying to keep appearances with us but the reality is very different. Here you have some examples:
The city council of Madrid has bought some buses which work with ethanol however they can´t use them, because ethanol has such a huge taxes which make imposible to use them.
For last 15 years or more in Spain there was the “Plan Prever” which consisted in paying some hundreds € when you sent to the scrapyard, an old car. And the old cars are the ones really pollute, the 80% of pollution beacuse of the cars is created by the 20% of the cars. This plan is going to finish this years.
So governements really want to stop global warming?

12. Javier Parra - 29 April 2007

It’s very difficult to stop it…Even if a governement wants to stop it, the problems that we have generated all of these years have been very harmful for our environment, and our world won’t never be the same.

Our society have condemned our world…

So in my opinion…No, we are not doing enough to stop global warming.

13. Sandra Fernández - 29 April 2007

There are a lot of things we can do, but the temperatures will increase a lot some day. This global warming means that Apocalypse is near, and it´s not the only sign.
In my opinion, there are a lot of things we can do to stop a little bit the global warming, but in the end, it would be unuseful.

14. Paola Sancho García - 1 May 2007

As Daniel says nowadays everything revolves around money, and so, Do you really think there’s something we could do?Sadly I don’t think so, I mean of course there are hundreds of issues waiting for a solution and starting in our homes we could change many things, but what about big companies? what is worst what about governments?
As I see it we are so stupid that surely we would wait for a big catastrophe to happen in the centre of Europe for example to be concerned, and then it surely will be late

15. Juan - 6 May 2007

I think we’re doing absolutely Nothing. It´s been a lot since scientists started to say Earth was dying, and in the last century the ozone layer has been destructed faster than in the 19 first centuries. Kyoto Protocol, advises, etc. Nobody cares about the global warming, because money is more important than life, and most people say “I´m not scared, if Earth is going to die in 150 years, I won´t suffer”, and that´s really ridiculous.

16. Ramona González - 10 May 2007

Global warming is really a very serious problem of the planet. It makes our environment worse and worse and the crucial need is to stop talking and start acting. Many goverments and organizations have wanted to solve this problem but most of them haven’t started yet. Why not? That’s the question. MONEY. That’s the answer.
For me, I really try to help our world. However, changing my behaviour cannot solve a big problem such as global warming but I feel proud of myself because I’m someone who wants to help our world.

17. Lucía Suárez Fernández - 15 May 2007

We’re doing nothing for stopping it. I think we aren’t really conscious about the risks to the planet. We should do more; it is said that small actions can make a big impact so if each one did his bit we would get great results. Because, in my opinion, Governments and companies are not being really honest, although they say they are doing everything possible to promote environmental policies, it seems they are more interested in other things.

18. Julio Muiña Nosti - 15 May 2007

We need to do much more about global warming, but we are at the beginning of the way. Our society has just become aware of this problem and both politicians and private companies started to set up the means to solve it. I think that the main problems will come in the future from countries like Brasil, China and India, all of them want the same development as western countries have.

19. Pedro Álvarez Sariego 5ºD - 17 May 2007

We are a bit guilty of global warming so we have to get the determination to solve the problem or at least make it not to get bigger. Governments and scientists have to work together to make a better world and to stop this problem. animals and plants get extincted everyday and we can´t avoid it .

20. Marta Arias - 18 May 2007

To reduce the effects of Global Warming is necesary the consensus between goverments of all the countries, but, unfortunately, it is extremely dificult to achieve. However, I think we can make something to improve the environment, like recycle paper and glass, take shower instead of take a bath, close our tips properly, …
But, I have to admit that everybody (me too) are very lazy when we have to recycle. We need to change our mind.

21. Jorge Rodríguez Prida - 17 February 2008

Well, the real question is if we can do anything. For example, one of the main causes of global warming is pollution caused by cars. However, new combustibles or more efficient motors can’t develope because when one of these appears, oil corporations buy the patents with their dirty petrodollars, so the new technologies can’t develope enough. That’s the reason why we are using petrol in the 21 century instead of alternative energies for cars, and that’s the reason why we won’t be able to fight global warming until these companies lose power. I’m sorry for my negative vision but I think it’s the truth.
