Motion for debate: Is going to a travel agency the best way to prepare your holiday?

Proposed by Daniel

Do you prefer travelling by your own or with an agency?

When you are preparing a trip, you begin to see places and places and suddenly this question arrives in your head. If you are going to search offers in a travel agency or if on the contrary you are going to search everything by yourself.

In my opinion is always better to prepare it by yourself. Because when I have prepared trips on my own I have enjoyed preparing them as much as making them. Another important reason is you can end up doing things completely on the spur of the moment. Furthermore you do many more things than in package holidays and enjoy a total freedom for changing your plans. Because many times you get to one place and it lets you down and you can’t leave it, which is terrible. Some people want to know all the ins and outs of some places, and maybe you would have enough with only a quarter of an hour. Another important point to consider is you can save a lot of money preparing everything yourself. If you go in a group , you can save a good amount of money. And avoidi ending up to your neck making extra hours in your job, to get the money for the trip.

Do you also consider preparing everything by your own is the best way of travelling?

Agencies can be useful in making reservations and booking hotels. However, it is better to talk to someone who has travelled to your destination and get feedback from them.

Javier Villallana, You must know a lot of people!! Anyway, going to some places/countries might be dangerous or you might get lost visiting everything you want, so you’d better ask in a Travel agency, there you will get updated information and will tell you the best itinerary to follow. Of course instead of this you can always buy some travel books or just take a rucksack and start walking, that’s all you need to go on holiday.

Where I said “…information and will tell you…” I wanted to say:
“…information and they will tell you…”

Maybe you don´t have time to prepare it, maybe you prefer that people who knows more about the place inform you and recommend you places, maybe the place where you are going is so dangerous that you prefer being backed up by an agency.

Those are the only reasons I would go to an agency to prepare the trip, because in any other circunstance, I am sure that I would do it myself, reading, surfing the internet, looking for sales, etc. And what is best, you won`t have to pay the agency for the services, and the trip will be cheaper.

Of course traveling with an agency is more comfortable: you don’t have to look in a hundred of webs to find the best price… But you have to pay for this comfort: The problem is that the agency gets a huge benefit planning your trip and sometimes they don’t show you the best prices so that you have to pay more money than planning your trip yourself, but… I’m a disaster making my own suitcase so… I would go to an agency if I don’t want to sleep in the street.

I´m not sure of my opinion…If I would travel with my parents, it could be better to plan it ourselves because just in this case we could do what we want, but always asking somebody who has experience on it,or who know the place we go.But if the travel is with my friends I prefer been helped by an agency because it is a way of get more organization

I’ve had bad experiences with travel agencies, every time I’ve tried to prepare one they never called me again, never prepared my tour, and a rested waiting and preparing my trip at home. They are a disaster. Well, maybe is better not to let them prepare it for you because it’s more expensive.

8. Francisco Javier Fernández García, 5ºD - 27 April 2007

I´ve never travelled with friends, but I think that planning the journey by yourself is cheaper, because you don´t have to pay the service of the travel agency. Nowadays, more and more people book their holidays through the Internet and some new air companies offer their flights only in Internet.

9. Sandra Fernández - 29 April 2007

I agree with Sandra López. I think if you want to prepare your holidays you have to know you will always be secure and your not going to get lost. If you go with your parents you can prepare it by yourselves and if you go with your friends you can ask a travel agency.

One of the things I less like about a travel agency is they give you everything done. I enjoy searching for a hotel surfing the internet, or searching for low cost, and that kind of things. An in addition I save money. So I always try to avoid the travel agencies.

As I see it it all depends on the destination you choose. I really like travelling and so I like preparing my trips, buying quides, reading magazines, surfing the net for information and booking everything on the net is quite easy for me, however for some destinations it’s better to go to agencies as it’s very important to stay in a safe place and in the net…we never know!

12. Alberto Pérez Meléndez - 1 May 2007

There are a number of aspects that make using a travel agency quite desirable.
A well-informed agent is always aware of the cheapest tickets and the best routing choices for your trip.
I think going to a travel agency is quite useful especially in peak seasons when the demand is high, because the agencies have arrangements with airlines and hotels to reserve an especific number of seats or rooms for customers in anticipation.

13. Javier Parra - 8 May 2007

When I travel without my parents I do it by myself, without looking to the travel agencys, but it is caused by the fact that the trips are very easy to organize. In the future I think that I will start using the agencys, It is easier and in some cases it’s cheaper.

14. Lucía Suárez Fernández - 14 May 2007

Well, I think it depends on what you want to do. Travel agencies are very useful in case you didn’t have enough time for planning your holidays or even for advising you about an unknown place. But in my opinion I find more exciting travelling on my own.

15. Julio Muiña Nosti - 15 May 2007

A travel agency is a very good way of preparing a travel if you don´t want or can not organize your own, and you could get nearly every one you need, from standard trips to adventure ones.

16. Ramona González - 16 May 2007

I usually spend my summer holidays in a self-drive tour of European countries and I always prepare it on my own.
Although I have to pass a long time searching on the Internet looking for the nicest houses and hotels to stay, I still think that preparing trips by yourself is much more interesting that package holidays.
Furthermore ,it’s a golden opportunity to practice your English.

17. Pedro Álvarez Sariego 5ºD - 17 May 2007

If you like adventure and thrill.seeking the best way to get it is doing it by yourself. It´s true that if you make all the arrangements you can get so tired but at last it´s very superb.

I vote for alternative ways to travel agencies, it´s more funny .

18. Marta Arias - 18 May 2007

Definitely I´d prefer to prepare my holidays in a travel agency rather than waste my time bookink it by myself.
if you have any problem with the hotel you only have to call the agency and they usually solve it.
Probably travelling with an agency is more expensive but you earn time looking places to go, prices and activities to do. Well, I think I´m getting older because these things look stressful for me.

19. abbey - 8 April 2008

In my opinion, it depends on the kind of holidays and it depend on the person. I mean, if you don´t feel like planning your holidays, the agencies are the best option. They can find you the suitable hotel for you, they can book your flight and the sightseeings activities, too.
On the other hand, I think taht it´s better to plan your own holidays. In my case, I enjoy looking for hotels, bars, museums and find all kind of amazing activities. It´s an important part of the trip!
