Motion for debate: Is having children between siblings antinatural?

Proposed by Sandra Fernández Rodríguez

Patrick and Susan, two German siblings, are married and have four children.

They didn´t know each other until Patrick went to Leipzig to meet his biological family. Patrick has already spent two years in prison for committing incest. They now live with their youngest daughter Sofia because their other three children have been brought to foster families. Two of them are known to have diseases such as epilepsy or some special needs.

There are several opinions about if incest should be known as a crime or just as the right that a couple of siblings have to enjoy their love. There is also another discussion: “Is it true that the children from a couple formed by two members of the same family will be abnormal?”

There are some quotes taken ffroom the page of the BBC dedicated to this piece of news:

“Why are disabled parents allowed to have children, or people with hereditary diseases or women over 40? No-one says that is a crime,” said Dr Wilhelm.

“It is based on long traditions in Western societies, and the law is here for a good reason,” said Prof Kunze.

“Medical research has shown that there is a higher risk of genetic abnormalities when close relatives have a child together. When siblings have children, there is a 50% chance that the child will be disabled,” he said.

I’m in favour of love in all the circunstances. What’ the matter if you fall in love with your sister or with your brother? It’s love at all. They both have been very brave recognising their love in public and in front of their family. Having a baby is another point… Couples in this situation should be very conscious of the risk they take having children, not only for their baby but also for future generations in their family.

Incest is equivalent to sexual relationship between 2 siblings…You can love your brother or sister, but not in this way. And if this love ends in incest…these people is reducing the genetic variability.

Patrick has spent 2 years in prison, so that means that incest is illegal…and 2 of their sons have diesases, probably caused by the recessive genes, which also develop mental retardation.

Incest is contrary to nature. Less genetic variability and recessive genes…and prison.

Javier, you´re right if Patrick has spent 2 years in prison that means incest is illegal but love, I mean ‘true love’ no matter with whom you fall in love, seems to me to be the greatest resource of pleasure and at sometimes it persists till the end of time. Lovers can endure far beyond that some friendships because through duration they tend to become something more. People who are in love become a kind of moral attachment. Nobody choose one’s relatives much less the person you fall in love with.

Think about the motion:

“Motion for debate: Is having children between siblings antinatural?”

Love? Maybe, but having children with your siblings is stepping over the thin line of illegal acts and inmoral things.

“Anti-natural” is already politically incorrect. This way of wording things turns me off right away. I don’t think this is the appropriate expression to sustain this argument. We can’t confuse situations that happen at random with the idea of accepting a normal relationship between siblings. Love between two people should never be brought under discussion, but due to the high possibilty of birth defects in a sibling couple they should seriously think about binging a child into this world.

6. Javier Parra - 15 April 2007

This word is in our dictionary….why Sandra has to change it?

If this word turns you off… I recomend you to read it and breath deeply before you get angry.

I’m not against love…but love in a lot of cases ends in sexual intercourses…and after 9 months you can have a baby with a very poor life because his diseases….

7. Rebeca Arévalo - 16 April 2007

In my opinion the proper word for describing this subject is not “antinatural” as in the title, the proper word is “dangerous”, and siblings should think it twice before taking the risk of having a baby which will probably not be bursting in health. But it is not antinatural, they only have the choice to do it or not.

If incest has been a crime in many cultures and for many, many years, it will be by some important reasons.
It is demostrated the when siblings have children, any new gene comes. And for this reason theese children are likely to be borned with diseases. Another important drawback is that a so that a split can be created in your family. So I don´t think it´s laughing matter, as many people think.

Children should be playing instead of being worrying about these things. They should play just for the sake of playing and learn and learn and learn…to be able to behave as sensible grown-ups, to have the skills and the brain to be able to, when they grow up.
Don’t let´s talk just about natural or antinatural, let’s talk about human beings.

10. Ana San José - 18 April 2007

I`m not in favour of this motion, I think that it´s antinatural and the sons/daughters will have genetical problems, that if it not shown over them it will be shown over their descendants.

Some time ago I`ve read about people that feel attracted over similar people, with same attitude, same hobbies, etc. And the article said that if people keep on acting like this, in the future it will be serious problems because genes of people would be so similar that new illneses would appear.

For this reason I think that descendant between siblings can bring a lot of problems and it is antinatural.

11. Sandra López - 21 April 2007

I think that between sibling always exist love, but is a different kind of love…I know that it could be a difficult situation for them if they have fallen in love but I think that it is a bit unnatural, but I don´t think that it could be consider like something illegal, and I can´t understan how a person could be sent to prision just for loving his sister, moreover knowing that there are murders in freedom

12. Francisco Javier Fernández García, 5ºD - 27 April 2007

In my opinion, having children between siblings is antinatural not only from a moral point of view but also from a medical or scientific point of view, because it is very likely that those children will be somehow disabled.

13. Núria Lagunas García - 27 April 2007

I totally agree with Fco javier.i can imagine myself loving my brother. Terrible. Poor ones

14. Sandra Fernández - 29 April 2007

I think having children between siblings is antinatural because they will probably have diseases, but it´s also true that the siblings can be totally in love so they will want to have children.

15. Paola Sancho García - 1 May 2007

Maybe you don’t know but nowadays we have new methods at reach to know everything about the diseases our future children could have in case one of the parents have a congenital disease, so i think it would work the same for this couples to know the risks their children could have.
Anyway, I don’t see all this horrors many of my partners see on this topic, love is like that and so we never know with whom we’ll fall in love.
But of course I think that if there’s a high probability of having an abnormal child, they should bare other things in mind like adoption.

16. Lucía Suárez Fernández - 9 May 2007

I’m not going to assess if relationship between siblings are morally acceptable or not, even if it can be regarded as a crime because I think it’s a tricky matter.

In my opinion, the main problem don’t lie in couple relationship, I’ve read some articles about this and it’s true there are great number of probabilities of having descendants with genetic abnormalities who would be doomed to suffer and receive special care forever. So, being aware of that they should consider the possibility of not having biological children in common.

17. Ramona González - 11 May 2007

Yes, I think that having children between siblings is unnatural.
Incestuous relations between a brother and a sister are illegal in most parts of the industrialized world, and the prohibition of intermarriage is based upon genetic considerations. In addition, the incest taboo is universal in human culture.

18. Julio Muiña Nosti - 15 May 2007

Well of course it is antinatural even if it happens by chance (as it was recently) there are risks for their children.

19. Marta Arias - 15 May 2007

In my opinion good parents want the best for their children so I can´t understand why this couple risked their children´s health in that way.
I can understand their desire of being parents but they Knew the dangers of have children between siblings.

20. Pedro Álvarez Sariego 5ºD - 17 May 2007

I think it goes againt Nature. It shouldn´t be allowed because it´s dangerous and because it´s bad for the children. What can they think about their parents when they grow up?
