Motion for debate: Would you take part in the reality show called “Extreme Makeover”?

Proposed by Alberto Pérez Meléndez

extreme-makeover.jpgWelcome to the next stage on reality broadcasting, this is ‘Extreme Makeover’.

This Television series showcases everyday people undergoing a series of cosmetic procedures and having their lives changed.

The Television series offers a new twist to the old makeover story. Over 7.000 applicants from across The United States applied not only to have not only their makeup done, but also their entire bodies.

Contestants have found their sense of self-appreciation restored as well as their confidence.

What makes this groundbreaking TV show really extreme is the fact that contestants are not just undergoing ordinary makeover staples such as new clothing, make-up and hair.

The greatest part of the Extreme makeover experience deals with plastic surgery.

Contestants have the opportunity to experience the benefits of plastic surgery through multiple procedures.

Participants on the show have for instance: nose jobs ,eye-surgery, breast augmentation, skin peels, laser treatments, collagen injections or Liposuction. They also benefit from a exclusive and skilled work team, known as ‘The Extreme Team” which includes: cosmetic surgeons, stylists, cosmetic dentists, trainers and nutritionists.

However, since its debut on Worldwide TV the show has provoked strong controversy among the audience and critics.

Each episode introduces contestants ‘before’ the big chance and also details the feature flaws that need fixing. Cameras follow each subject through the procedures and counselling the tutorials required for a new and an improved life, then the subject’s duly

Shocked and thrilled friends and relatives gather to witness the great “after” reveal.

Furthermore following a piece of news that appeared some weeks ago on The Hollywood reporter, a webpage dedicated on reviewing reality-shows, ABC has cancelled the forth season after just one episode. The show with an average of 4.8 million viewers.

ABC planned to bring the show back, although after having checked lower results from audience pools, the Network decided to pull the plastic surgery series. They instead filled its timeslot with Grey’s Anatomy which repeats pulled in more viewers than

‘Extreme Makeover’.

I would never take part in any reality show. I don’t like others intruding into my private life. I think it is a kind of pornography because you show something of yourself that should be kept just inside your privacy. Your feelings, emotions… so that somebody makes huge profit.
It is viewed with disapproval to show a naked body but nobody thinks the same of showing feelings or emotions and taking pleasure in seeing it. Why?

2. Nuria Lagunas Garcia - 28 March 2007

Neither do I. The most important think is to educate people in good valour and respect others is what everybody should do. If we don’t make beauty move the world people would accept themselves easily but if TV is always saying to be thin and be pretty/handsome is the most important thing in the world you’ll never be happy with who you are. One yoghurt a day doesn’t make you look better, you’ll look sick!!

3. Rebeca Arévalo - 31 March 2007

The main point is: Who can be sure of what level of necessity of a physical change a person needs? I mean, what points do the directors use in order to make a short list of the participants? Why are they sure that these people are the right ones to participate in the program? I say this because I’m sure there are more people outdoors who don’t like their appearance but they haven’t got so much luck to be include in one of these programs. Besides, don’t TV producers know that they take a big risk paying surgery that can go wrong for the patient?

4. Rebeca Arévalo - 2 April 2007

By the way, has anybody in the program thought what would happen if the participant doesn’t like his/her new appearance and decides to sue the program? And… What about the risks we take with surgery? A lot of people have died due to this kind of surgery. If something goes wrong in the program… The TV channel and the clinic would go bankrupt.

5. Alberto Pérez Meléndez - 5 April 2007

Rebeca, related to what you have mentioned about what would happen if a contestant decides to sue the program, today I´ve readed on a spanish newspaper an article about this topic.
In this article,Defender of the Patient calculates that 5 per cent of the interventions of cosmetic surgery does not obtain the wished results or they are negligently realized . Besides,
The General Council of Doctors’ Colleges put in doubt the validity of the assent in patients who receive the medical free treatment that offers ‘Extreme Makeover’.

6. Alberto Pérez Meléndez - 5 April 2007

TV is quite often overflowing us with all these new reality programs, some of them zoom on physical appearance. In Extreme makeover, contestants are transformed through exclusive cosmetic surgeries and many other procedures but then the problem is all the complications associated with all the treatments and especially with the cosmetic surgery.
Related to the contestans , are they truly ready to assume all those physical and emotional changes?.
From my point of view, Extreme make over seems to me like a media spectacle that even breaks the intimacy that must surround the Medecine.

8. Javier Villallana - 10 April 2007

Absolutely not! I accept myself the way I am, no matter how old I am. This is out of the question for me.

9. Javier Villallana - 10 April 2007

Absolutely not! I accept myself the way I am, and no matter my age! This is out of the question for me.

10. Lucía Suárez Fernández 5º F - 13 April 2007

There are many people who don’t feel self-confident because of their physical appearence, they don’t accept themselves and that causes them social and psycological problems. Sometimes with just a style change they improve their image but in other cases it isn’t enough and an aesthetics operation is necessary. But in this tv program, people is underwent lots of operations, something I find it an atrocity. Despite of getting good results people run the risk of being changed into someone they aren’t. And finally, it can make them feel uncomfortable because they don’t recognise who is in front of the mirror.

In my case, that kind of things frighten me so I prefer to remain with my defects, but I think this is connected with Rebeca’s topic and the importance of a good physical appearence in our society.

11. Rebeca Arévalo - 16 April 2007

Sure, Lucía. Due to these kind of programs, physical appearance is more and more important nowadays. Why aren’t you happy with your physical appearance? It’s very easy to change it, but… If you change it you’ll never be happy with it, and you’ll want more and more changes. Don’t you think that each wrinkle on your face represent your personality or your memories of life depending on the gestures you use? Do you want an inexpressive face made by a scalpel?

12. Ana San José - 18 April 2007

I admit that is interesting to see how a person can change thanks to the plastic surgery but I wouldn´t go to this program.

I admit that there are serious physical problems and that people could feel bad about their physique so surgery it is a good option for them, but I think that variety is the best we have and with surgery we all will end looking the same way.

Look at the Dove advertisement, I think it is really good, there are just a few non good looking people, whats the matter with the age, the weight…all of us are beautiful if we take a simple care of us, and there`s not any characteristic that ensure you to be a good looking person, it`s a combinaton of averything what made people look good.

13. Lucía Suárez Fernández - 19 April 2007

Rebeca, I’m sorry for not having explained better my point of view but, as I said in your debate, I’m totally against of being a slave of your physical appearence, I think I’m more than a simple front. But there are people who aren’t comfortable for many reasons and decide to change, and I only said that if I were in that situation I wouldn’t do it.

14. Sandra López - 21 April 2007

I would never take part in this kind of reality show, but not for the fact that it is a show,it is for the fact that I think that a person is more than a phisyc. From my point of view, may be in our lives we would have to be operated with some risks and I think that we don´t have to go into the operating theatre and having unnedded risks just for changing our nose our lips or something else

15. Francisco Javier Fernández García, 5ºD - 27 April 2007

I wouldn´t do cosmetic surgery privately and, of course, even less on TV. Cosmetic surgery has many risks and I don´t think it´s worthwhile. Nowadays too much importance is given to the image of a person.

16. Daniel - 28 April 2007

I wouldn´t take part in this reality show. I would feel shame of myself. Because you can want to change your body a bit, but the fact millions of people can´t watch it on TV makes it shameful. They will think look at him, he hates his body and he goes to the TV same as if TV was a circus. Because are much more than a physic, there are many things inside us the plasctic surgery will never be able to change.

17. Sandra Fernández - 29 April 2007

I would never have cosmetic surgery and even less in a reality show. I think the surgeons have a lot of experience and they are the best ones in Spain, and the contestants can have cosmetic surgery if they want because I admit that they are really desperate and depressed because of their physic, but there are lots of people much uglier than them that know the best of them is their inside.

18. Paola Sancho García - 1 May 2007

Definitely not! by the way I think the program has been eliminated as last sunday antena3 broadcasted a film at its time..
I totally agree with Javier in the sense that it’s near pronography as driven by curiosity I saw the program one night.
I can’t understand what have people in mind to go there, it’s your decision if you wan’t to change anything you don’t like about yourself but on a TV program?
In my opinion it should be made illegal, and of course I would never take part in one of this programs

19. Ramona González - 11 May 2007

I would never take part not only in this kind of reality show, but in any kind of them.Nevertheless, I’m not absolutely against plastic surgery. Of course people should think less about their appearance and more about what really matters in life but, what’s wrong with that if you alter a little the shape of your nose or remove fat from your stomach or winkles from your forehead?
It’s up to you but never in the public eye.

20. Julio Muiña Nosti - 15 May 2007

I would never take part in any kind of show, soft makeover or extreme makeover, but I understand that it is good chance for people to change some part of their bodies, if you are extremely prone to suffer because you don´t like some part of your body go for it it´s free.

21. Marta Arias - 15 May 2007

I can´t believe that a person needs 5 or more different surgical operations to become beauty. If they hate all their bodies they need a psychologist more than a doctor.
And the truth is that most of those people only need to wear properly and change their hair style

22. Javier Parra - 16 May 2007

Marta, your first paragraph its so good.

I don’t like this program…it’s a bit stupid for me. And I never take part in this reality show.

23. Pedro Álvarez Sariego 5ºD - 17 May 2007

I think everybody has to accept themselves as they´re. If you want you can change something about your appearance that you don´t like it´s right but not in order to make an extreme change.

I don´t think it´s a good idea to go to that programs. I agree with Javier, idon´t like them.

24. Daniel - 18 May 2007

I am reading this debate and I almost can´t believe it, many of us begin I would never… I have never thought, or watched so many people in a debate agreed so much. As I don´t think we are a radical part of our society or something like that, I can´t understand why theese kind of programs are being boarcrasted. Unless, people(I´m not talking about you) say a thing, later get home and do the opposite.
