Motion for debate: Do you think euthanasia should be made legal?

Proposed by Ramona González Mallada

This subject is a very difficult and complex one but I do feel that euthanasia should be made legal. I feel that everyone has the right to die and despite their good intentions, doctors or gods do not have the right to control a life.

If a terminally ill person stipulates that they wish to die, then that is their prerogative. If it is not known what the wishes of a patient are, then the decision, of course, is much more difficult. There may be cases where a family member just wants to kill the patient perhaps because they are a burden, when the patient doesn’t really want to die. If euthanasia was legalised this may be a dangerous consequence. However, family members have more of a right to make that kind of decision than a doctor does.

I don’t believe euthanasia is murder because the issue of euthanasia arises because the patient has an incurable illness or injury. If they have a poor quality of life, are in a vegetative state or are being kept alive artificially, surely it is worse for them to be kept alive. To be kept alive would be undignified. Euthanasia is not similar to other killings because it involves compassion and love.

After all, it is a good thing that we have the right to live, but… why really have the obligation?

I think the first thing is to abide by the vital testament.
Second, to be sure that the procedure is “legal”, I mean, be sure that the patient has not been forced or coerced into doing so regulating all the steps, screening the whole process to avoid organ smuggling and things like this.

Widespread poverty, could drive many to resort to desperate measures in a search for economic security. In this case organ smuggling can do benefit from it.

My opinion in this subject is that it should be legal. Of course, we only should consider euthanasia for terminal patients whose destiny is to die os for those who, being alive are in such bad conditions that dying is better than the suffering provide by life. I’m sure their families wouldn’t want the patient to suffer if there weren’t a cure. Of course, the decision of dying is less difficult if the patient can make it by himself.

3. Alberto Pérez Meléndez - 27 March 2007

I totally agree with Ramona. I don´t consider euthanasia as a murder, in fact I think it is the right of dying for seriously ill people in accordance with their own assumed whises.I´m completelly sure that ill people who are suffering for long ,desire to try it because they might see no purpose in continuing to live. Why a human being wouldn´t be allowed to have their final exit as much dignified possible¿.

Spain’s Penal Code art 15 and Human Rights Act 1998 say: “Everyone’s right to life.”
But, what kind of life? and what’s more, what includes this term of “life”?
Think about your grandma, she’s old and sick, or a boy, he’s born with a terrible degenerate disease, why should they live the last years of their life like a vegetable?
I know people are not animals, but if my dog or cat was in such a state, then it is legal for me to decide to have him or her euthanised.
Obviously I do not want to see anyone Euthanised unless it is really necessary but we should respect the wishes of others. For me the term life means “dignity and integrity”so If I ever get old and really sick I hope euthanasia will be legal, because if I’m suffering, I don’t want to drag it out.

Eu- thanatos = good death, that’s what the word which comes from the latin stands for. If the procedures and the decision of the person who wants euthanasia are respected, we shouldn’t be afraid of it. Human rights and humanity should be over religion which is against euthanasia, but, which reasons does it have?

6. Paola Sancho García - 3 April 2007

Absolutely convinced in favour. In my opinion the worst thing that could happen to anyone in life would be ending in a bed like a vegetable but absolutely conscious of the things that are happening around him, living the suffer of his family but what is worst conscious of his situation and aware that his life is ended.
In my opinion the legalization shouldn’t even been questioned as we are not talking about the suffer of cows, but about the suffer of people condemned to live when there is nothing but death.

7. Javier Parra - 3 April 2007

Who can decide if a “vegetable” wants to die?

“A persistent vegetative state (PVS) is a condition of patients with severe brain damage in whom coma has progressed to a state of wakefulness without detectable awareness.”

So, you are saying that your family can decide about your life, about your own death…and you can say anything about it?

I’m not saying that I’m against euthanasia, but is a really difficult term…If it is legalized some people can stop fighting.

I’m in favour, but in some determined cases, like the one of Ramon Sampedro. It was a kind of suicide, because in Spain the euthanasia is illegal, but quadriplegic is a really hard disease…and without cure.

8. Alberto Pérez Meléndez - 5 April 2007

I think the wrong thing is to consider euthanasia as an assisted suicide.Suicide is usually an impulsive decision. This generally occurs when a person, feeling depressed at a moment take the decission to take his/her own life.
When you are paralysed, your brain is functioning normaly but you are unable to do anything physical,so everything must done for you.
The right to die should be in any case a personal choice it´s a question of life and death literally. It envolves a high degree of responsibility but think about for istance , earlier people who were against organ transplants, then society gradually has grown to accept it.

Euthanasia is a personal issue. The state should guarantee it for the people who request it. A secular state is the beginning and then it is up to the individual to decide what he or she wants.

11. Ana San José - 18 April 2007

I say yes. It`s about freedom and people wouldn`t be disturbing the rest,so why not?

The complicated thing it is that control over the cases should be enormous, because there are some depressive cases that can be recovered but that would be suicide. What this deal about is those people uncapable of killing him/herself. I think that not letting them die we are taking away a right that they would have in other circunstances.

When all is said and done everybody should be free to do whatever they want with their lives.

12. Sandra López - 21 April 2007

I think that euthanasia should be legal, because it is a question of freedom, and some people couldn´t live properly the rest of their live.. but the problem is ..who will desconect them??

13. Daniel - 21 April 2007

Euthanasia is a very serious issue, beacuse if we make legal it could make posible many sick people in his last months of life although they want to be get on living some doctors can kill them saying they wanted to die. However nowadays is unfair many whose life is spend all the day in his bed suffering, this suffering doesn´t finish. It gets on, one day and another and another.
For theese reason I think it should be legal but with some aspects who really make sure when euthanasia is practised it´s because the person really wants to give up living.

14. Francisco Javier Fernández García, 5ºD - 27 April 2007

It´s one of those very controversial and complicated topics because someone has to decide about the death of a person. From my point of view it should be made legal in cases when there is no hope from a medical point of view.

15. Sandra Fernández - 29 April 2007

I´m not in favour of euthanasia because, although everybody has the right to do what they want, there are a lot of things a terminal ill person can do; for example, a paraplejic person can paint or write books with his mouth. And also, everybody has the right to live.

16. Lucía Suárez Fernández - 10 May 2007

It’s a controversial issue because it depends on your moral values, religious believes, culture…In my case, I’m in favour of euthanasia and I think it should be legalised in order to claim for the right to death with dignity and avoid unnecessary suffering. In case of a poor quality of life or a terminal illness I would like to choose what to do with my life but, at the same time, I recognise that if I had to decide of a relative’s life I probably wouldn’t think in the same way.

17. JULIO MUIÑA NOSTI - 16 May 2007

I think that euthanasia should be made legal because some patients suffering terrible damages or illnesses without cure don´t want to follow living in that conditions, they can not kill themselves and ask for help, I believe that it´s cruel and selfish not to help them, it´s incredible how controversial this issue is, like many other things it is based on religious prejudice that still have a lot of influence on our society but in my opinion little by little we will see this subjet regulated.

18. Pedro Álvarez Sariego 5ºD - 17 May 2007

Euthanasia it´s a very controversial item. In my case I´ll never ask for it but everybody has a point of view about it and all of them are right.

19. Marta Arias - 18 May 2007

I agree with Javier that the first thing is make sure that the patient want to die.
But, if we are sure of that, euthanasia should be made legal.
My life is for me and nobody can say if I can end with it or not.
