New Motion for Debate: Modern videogames or classic toys

Proposed by Pedro Álvarez Sariego

Nowadays our children´s  entertainment is based just in computers and videogames. What has happened with the plumb soldiers, the dolls and the puppets? Children now dislike this kind of toys and prefer those where you don´t need anyone else to play with.

What do you think about this evolution in the world of entertainment? Is it possitive or negative?

My opinion is that it is negative, because the main cause for playing is having fun, but we can’t forget that another important point for children is making friends, socialising and making familiar relation-ships stronger. A friend (I mean, true friends) is an “instrument” for having fun (among other things) that will be always there for you (and you will be always there for him), meanwhile a toy or a computer could break down.

I don´t see why modern toys should be worse or better than the old ones. It depends on how they are used and the time the childrem are playing with them, it said that they are violents but I remenber when in the past many toys were guns, rifles, swords and those generations were not more or less violernts than the ones before.

Classic games or toys give children the opportunity of socialising, making friends and playing with them, something which is an important way to learn social rules such as sharing, helping and having fun, while playing computer games means that children generally play alone. In my opinion it depends on the way you use them, we can’t demonise videogames, because they are neither wholly good nor wholly bad, but it’s true that excessive use can cause addiction and weaken social relationships.

In this hi-tech era with Mp4 players and video games, classic games are great to today´s children. They continually rank as popular gifts for birthdays and other special occasions.
Classic toys offer an approach to creativity for children of all ages.
Children grow up but classic toys stand the test of time passing down to future generations.

5. Paola Sancho García - 16 May 2007

Both are great in my opinion when they’re combined, I mean, modern videogames are not bad for kids as they estimulate them but the problem comes when they spend hours and hours in front of the screen like coach potatoes, then it’s time parents offer them other kind of entertainment as our classical games, dalls, cars o whenever it is.

Books are another good idea to offer to children if they have free time, and for them to learn that nowadays we can’t have everything on computers ot TV.

I do not agree with the introductory statement. My children still play with traditional games and also enjoy playing educational computer games appropriate for children their age (3 and 6). Technology is not necessarily a bad thing but when used correctly it can be a very good thing. Parents and the teachers at school need to guide children so that they can take advantage of computer games and activities appropriate for their age level. One should not substitute the other.

I think that chldren should start to use modern tecnology as soon as they could, because they will have to live whit this all their lives, but what i think that ismore important is to spend times with other childs, playing traditional games, playing with dolls, soldiers, little cars.. I think that this kind of wames shouldn`t be lost. I remember me as a child playing dolls with my friends and jumping a rope..they are such a sweet remind that I want my daugther(in a far future)to have this kind of reminds

In my opinion, and there are recent reports that confirm this, we tend to see “videogames” as a toy that isolates children and manipulates their brain, and this is false. With videogames you can learn a lot of things, from foreign languages, a lot of general information, etc. There are videogames (specially these called Roleplaying Games, like Final Fantasy) whose argument is better than lots of films nowadays, that makes a children think and imagine the world in which he is playing.

In addition, children don´t have to isolate themselves, because nowadays we have the technology and resources for playing on-line with live chat and voice communication, which improves the cooperation of the players and it also adds the chance of becoming friends.

Classic toys? Of course they’re good and necessary, we don´t have to exclude one of the choices: maybe a child can play modern videogames and classic toys.

9. Daniel - 17 May 2007

In this topic there´s no comparation, of course, classic toys. We only must see the childrens nowadays, and the children of 30 years ago. Children used to be thin, there have always been fat children, but anything which can be compared, with what is happenning now. Children used to play football, basket or simpyly playing in the streets, parks non-stop. They never got tired, they enjoyed being with their friends, and in addition they were used to address each other. However now, they go out school, and they spend the afternoons, lying on the sofa playing to the play station and eating, or wathcing TV, becomig couch potatos. And this is provocating them, many deseases I´m sure if this doesn´t change in 20 years at least a half of the popullation will have problems with overweight.

It is possitive, I think that toys are evolving the same rate as the real world, with this advance toys, videogames, interactive, virtual… they train for the future to know how to use the new tecnologies, and they develope other qualities, for example spacial sense.

Is it not true that children operate better with computers than adults?

11. Pedro Álvarez Sariego 5ºD - 17 May 2007

Ithink that children have to use technology as soon as possible but just because the ´ll have to deal with it when they grow up but children also need that kind of intelectual entertaintment that makes brain exercise. A mixture of both is the best choice for the children´s development.

12. Daniel - 18 May 2007

Pedro although children need to learn to use tecnology I don´t think videogames are the best way. Because they are only playing, what they won´t do, it won´t be very usefull in the future. I don´t want you to think I´m forbidden video games, by no means, but I don´t think the best way of bringing them up is giving them a computer to spend the afternoon in front of a computerscreen.
Another important point to consider is the problem internet can make there are many dangerous things in internet and it´s quite difficult avoid them to find them, and many parents haven´t got enough knowledge to know what their children are wathcing so it will be imposible for them to protect them.

13. Núria Lagunas García - 18 May 2007

Well Daniel, you have strong opinions about all… Is that all new era is dangerous or bad? Of course all things have good and bad points, i agree with paola, combination is the solution. This issue is similar to the one of television, my opinion: try to do a lot of things with your children and try to make our children know : “classic games or toys that give them the oportunity of socialising, making friends and playing with them, something which is an important way to learn social rules such as sharing, helping and having fun” as Lucia said.

14. Marta Arias - 18 May 2007

I have 7 little cousins and all Christmas was the same: they had lots of electronic toys but after 2 hours they were boring of looking at them and they end playing with the box.
When they grew up videogames appeared in their lifes and now they spend hours playing with the play station.
I think is not healthy to stay at home all the afternoon instead of go out with friends.
