Motion: Fashion changes more quickly than society

Presented by Ana Bermúdez Gavito

two.jpgWe live in a World of changes, and fashion is always changing and very quickly.
You could think that fashion change more quickly than the culture of society.
Have you ever thought about it?

We normally use “fashion” when something is glamourous or with style, but also it has several negatives meaning such as materialism, envy, without personality. The way people dressed in the past years no one really cared what they were wearing and nowadays you are not “cool” because of what you wear. Now in society when people think about what’s fashion, they think in rich people wearing beautiful clothes and smart cars.

There has (and always will be) an obligation for people to dress a certain way to conform to society. That’s not something new to this generation.
I think that in these years the importance of fashion in growing up, in regards to labels and fashion.
But fashion has always been important and, of course, anyone who goes against the fashion trend will be thought of as fashion-impaired.

fashion.jpgI do think that the cost of clothing has increased and we have created the idea that the more expensive something is, the better it is. But that didn’t necessarily start in the 90s…that has been growing for decades. Furthermore fashion has been regarded as a status symbol or a personal statement of the person who wears it.

However, if one were sensible, one would wear clothing according to the climate of their region and their way of live.

what is a “fashion victim”? A person who slavishly follows current fashion. But, what about your own personality? That’s the first problem, I mean, what is happening with (almost) all people today (both women and men)? Sometimes, it seems to me that they really need to be said what or how they should dress, and they use clothes just because someone says they are fashion, even when is something that obviously doesn’t suit them… I’m quite sure that all of you have thought in any moment of your life, seeing one of those fashion victim, “Are you aware of how ridiculous you look?”.

I don’t think there are so many “fashion victims”, because in my opinion people just try to buy and wear clothes that suit them well. You can just buy the clothes which are in the shop, are you following a trend just because of that??
I don’t agree with Pollock about that things about clothes and personality. I mean five years ago I can’t imagine me wearing another kind of trousers than bell-bottoms, and nowadays I feel the same for the drain-pipe trousers. I’m still the same person, it’s just that finding today a bell-bottom is complicated, and I think that there is not point in wasting my time searching them.
Don’t you think that always going against the trends is being another kind of fashion victim?

In my opinion, all possibilities about styles have still discovered, it´s difficult that appears something new. For this reason, everybody, who lives in developing countries, can choice the style that made they feel more comfortable. It´s true that a high percent of people can not afford clothes designed for a well-known designer or for a famous brand. But there are many shops, which sell available clothes in all the styles that you can imagine.

When you walked for the street, you can see people wear jeans or smart trousers, tennis or high-heeled shoes, blouses or sweatshirts..etc. I think that in this decade the glamour is to have your own style.

Talking about the culture, I believe that it happens something similar to the fashion. In this moment there are a lot of different cultures, which are known for all the world. People is free to follow the culture that they want.

History shows that thought has been the engine that has moved the society. Now, we’re living a period of rationalism that philosophers ‘thought’ two hundred years ago.
However, in the last years, I’ve the feeling that thought has been replaced by fashion and designers are the new philosopher of today.

I Really agree with Tarantula. I don´t think that to be glamorous and stylish you need to have a lot of money. Nowadays there are a lot of shops in which you can find good clothes at a very good price. I find very stupid when people spend mint of money on a piece of clothes just because it was made for an important designer, for me these kind of people is not more glamorous than a person who buy his clothes in zara for example.

I don’t think the fashion have change so much during the last years, in fact, all clothes we were today are an ancient fashion like flared trousers or long dresses that are nowadays the ultimate!

“Fashion changes more quickly than society”

Fashion is a business, a way of selling clothes quicker than they’re spoiled.

“There has (and always will be) an obligation for people to dress a certain way to conform to society”

I hope that won’t last forever. I think our clothes are a great way of improving our creativity and to reflect our personality, but I hate being told what should I wear. It is just making you let all this creativity go.

Believe it or not, nobody can deny that we are influenced by fashion in a very indescribable way. If you do not believe me, imagine these girls who try to immitate their idols and copy every single detail of their idol’s clothing. Besides, fashion may lead you to lose your own identity!!!!

9. Blick - 15 May 2008

I completely agree with Scaramouhe. Fashion has always been a business and it has to change just to make those business work.
We usually have clothes that we have bought last year or two years ago and we know we can still wear them. But, suddenly, they are old-fashion just because Versace or Zara said it.
And it is a pity because we have very often things in our wardrobe that really make us seem really nice. But, of course, we have to buy new things to be fashion.
Anyway, I have just decided to wear again those things that made me feel nice last summer. I´m sorry Lacoste, Tommy or whoever!!!!!
