Motion: “FOR OR AGAINST FAMILY GUY?”
Motion presented by Águeda Fernández

Despite the fact that I don’t like television, there are some cartoons that make me laugh my head off. I’m hooked on Futurama and The Simpsons but the fact is that Family Guy is even better! I just find these cartoons are superb.
Peter and Lois Griffin live in the Spooner Street (Quahog) with their daughter Meg and their two sons: Chris and Stewie. Griffin is a fat man with a tiny mind, whereas his wife is a sensible woman. Their oldest son (Chris) takes after his dad and Meg is a teenager who dreams of becoming popular in the high school. Stewie is just a diabolical baby, he’s always planning to kill his mother and he feels isolated as he’s too intelligent. They also have a talking dog called Brian. This dog is very intelectual and sensitive, but he’s also an alcoholic. The family lives surrounded by nice neighbours as Cleveland and Glenn Quagmire.
Griffin family is not only a crazy family, but also an ironic view of American society. Family Guy are definitely not cartoons for children, as sarcasm encompasses each episode. Some people say they sometimes go too far and can be annoying and disrespectful. It’s true that there are some episodes where they use swear words and critizise the Church, the Society or the Government, but from my point of view these institutions deserve being critizised. Do you agree with me?

I also love Family Guy, I think that they are really funny, but sometimes they could be really offensive. I think they are OK for adults, but they should change the time of broadcast. I think it’s more apropiated to emit it at South Park’s time (1 a.m.) than at the Simpson’s (14 p.m.)
Well, I also love family guy. I like the way they critisize American society, but many times they are very cutting.
For me it´s ok that they ridicule some aspect of american goverment, or church, but I think offend other weak communities ( for example handicapped people) is not fair.
I love Family Guy!!! In my opninion is one of the funniest cartoons I’ve ever seen. I completely agree with you Agueda, “Family Guy” isn’t really offensive, it’s only a critic to the american society, sometimes it’s a bit hard but it isn’t disrespectful from my point of view.
Also the plot is really funny and sometimes it’s so absurd that you don’t understand the joke but you laugh. I think Family Guy it’s perfect.
I am sorry but I don’t like that sort of cartoons. They are too much insulting for people who have their own point of view about The Church, the Society and the Government.
Simpson’s, Futurama, South Park and this one, Family Guy are controversial. They are not suitable for children or adults. So I don’t recommend watching them.
I have just read these four comments and it’s great to find such a range of opinions!
I really love family guy! They´re great, they are hilarous and why should be banned? The world won´t be better and people won´t be more polite. They´re only cartoons and people know it.
I think that family guy, and also the simpson’s, futurama and south park, that cosual mentioned, are great cartoons. Of course some of these cartoons are not recommended for childrens, but I don’t know why cosual mentioned the simpson’s because I think they are not as controversial as shout park or family guy. I think that people who feel ofended shouldn’t watch this cartoons, but Ithere are a lot of people who enjoy them and sometines the political incorrect humour is funnier than the political correct one.
Family Guy… Well I have to recognize that I see them whenever I get the chance, but it’s obvious that these are controversial cartoons. Everything depends on the point of view, and I’m sure that they can offend everybody in some way. In my opinion I think tit’s better not to worry too much. It’s better if we think of Family Guy just as cartoons, and if we try not to go further, otherwise… we won’t be understanding the point of it.
It is said that Czech people has beared all their historical problems thanks to their sense of humour. Why not to have cartoons like this which helps us to see from other point of view our problems?
It should also be said that I agree with Diana Fernández about that its time of broadcast has to be replaced because its acid humour wuoldn’t be suitable for children.
Only one thing against it: I don’t aprove the way Louise is treated by Stewie. That reminds me the tricky problem of domestic violence.
I’ve always enjoyed this kind of cartoons, particularly Futurama and South Park, but about Family Guy, there is some strange reason why I don’t like it at all. Probably, it is because of the father of the family, Peter Griffin, he has everything that I hate in a man: he is stupid, incompetent, lazy and overweighed. And what is worse, the way he treats his daughter, he is continuously humiliating her.
Anyway, to be honest, I have to say that sometimes I have a good time watching this series.
I don’t think Family guy should be banned. In my opinion, American society needs these kinds of critics (which could help them to grow up as a society).
I agree with Eileen, the way Stewie treats is mother, is not suitable for a cartoons emitted in that hour.
Goose you have a lot of reason, the role of peter griffin is many times unpleasant but it is known that in this sort of sitcoms, there are stereotypes.
Totally for.
It is hilarious, and if anyone finds it insulting it is because when it hurts the most is when it is true.
When I was a child I used to watch cartoons like barrio sesamo or los fruitis, in my opinion this type of cartoons are the ones that are supposed to be watched by kids and I agree with that but I think that this cartoons only contribute to one important thing, education, and kids have to know all about real life and of course to have a good time that what you want when you watch the simpsons or family guy; so I am really convinced that family guy shouldn`t be banned. We have to have the posibility to choose what we want to watch and in our times there are lots of tv channels so you could do a bit of zapping.
I don’t follow Family Guy because of the timetable, but when I have the oppotunity I watch it and I always have a good time.
It is definitely not made for kids,so I think the timetible should be changed from lunch time to dinner time or even later.
Except for this little remark, I have nothing against this sort of series. Sometimes they are a perfect way to criticize some aspects of our daily life, so nobody should get offended! As many people say, they are only cartoons
Wow! It’s marvelous to find so many people who like this type of cartoons. I believed that only freaks like watching “Family Guy” but I saw that many of you like other similar series as “South Park”, “Futurama”, and “The Simpsons”, obviously. So, I’m not as alone as I though.
However, what really surprises me is the comment of COSUAL. I know that characters on these cartoons often use insults when they talk about something or someone they are criticize and that you can watch some kind of violent scenes (as you can see on the “Itchy and Scratchy” sketches in “The Simpsons” series) that could maybe confuse children, but adults?.
You have to be open-minded when you see these cartoons to catch the joke and not get angry with them. You don’t have to take it seriously or you didn’t smile either with the sketches and, what is worse you could get angry with their comments and think that they are really swearing to you, so you could finally find these animated sitcoms very disgusting, as it seems.
I think that if someone doesn’t like children watch these cartoons, OK, I understand their point of view and it’s up to their parents, but as an adult, please, try to take it easy and you could probably have a healthy session of acid humor which is really necessary on these days.
I am not familiar with this kind of cartoons but having read all your opinions I understand that those are not just a critic but they make a fool of our society in most of the situations. I do not like watching TV too much except those programs which show the reality of life, our daily routine, our social and economical situation but under an ironic point of view and not a ridiculous one. They should be as neutral as possible but without hiding the main idea of the matter.
