Motion: Is Heavy Metal as dangerous as people think?
Presented by Daniel Antuña Jiménez
We are tired of hearing on TV that Heavy Metal introduce people into a state of dementia that makes them become serial killers. From the time of its birth to nowadays this type of music has had the same stigma. It’s true that this music has often sexual and violent content in its lyrics, but it isn’t much more excessive as some other lyrics you can find in rap or indeed in some operas. The main problem is considering this music as the cause of the crime, which is not usually true. However, the media always told us that is a dangerous music for our children because they don’t like the lyrics and the manners of the songs because they don’t agree with the established government or with the conventionalism of the moment.
But, is there really some type of correlation between this music and the murderers? And, what is more important, should this music be forbidden, because is a real danger of all of us or is another established taboo? Read the article from the Wikipedia about the case of Charles Manson and the song Helter Skelter, watch these videos I could find on the net and tell us what you believe about this interesting topic, I think.

Heavy metal is a really broad tendence, you could call it a cultural movement.
As long as I’m concerned, I love many heavy metal songs and I don’t find they’re any kind of danger to no one.
I would like to put emphasis on the first thing I said: it is a really BROAD tendence.
This means you may find hundreds of styles, from the true beginnings in the 70s to the latest fashion. There’s room for noise and for masterpieces. Songs of hate, love or hilarious criticism.
Saying heavy metal is dangerous is just the same as saying rap creates gangsters or pop makes people run out of brain.
I don’t think this type of music encourages people to commit crimes or something like that.Thinking in this way we should also mention television or computer games;such a delicate subject those days!!
This kind of music can influence teenagers in the way they dress or in their appearance in general, but in my opinion it doesn´t go further!
I don’t like heavy metal music, with this I only mean that I don’t listen to it, but I had never think that it was a dangerous thing. I can’t agree with Daniel about that “we are tired of hearing on TV that Heavy Metal introduce people into a state of dementia” because I haven’t heard it before. In may opinion there aren’t many people who asociates heavy metal and violence.
I really enjoyed Marylin Manson’s chinwag when I watch “Bowling for Columbine” for the first time. He’s a very sensitive man, despite being considered as a mad rock-star.I totally agree with him as the president of USA has much more power than his songs.
I love some heavy metal bands and I don’t understand why they are supossed to be dangerous (specially for teenagers).I just believe that people need someone to blame for and considering singers as criminals is an easy solution.I personally think that some bands which are considered to be politically-correct sing sexist and homofobic lyrics while anybody cares about it (for instance,”reguetòn” usually has horrible lyrics which underestimate women and have no sense at all.)
I just don’t see why some great cds have “Parental advisory”.I mean, lyrics are not dangerous or controversial, sometimes they’re just true.Reality shouldn’t be banned.
I agree with that (despite I also find Manson insane).
There are some really good heavy metal artists. For example, in Spain we could find Tierra Santa, Ars Amandi or Mago de Oz. Every single of them has much better musical quality than the average you may have in pop music. What is more, if we read their lyrics, we’ll see they’re deep and with a good literary style.
