Last November 26, the students of 1º Bachillerato went to La Laboral in Gijón with intention of seeing a movie. The reason was that the film festival was taking place, as it has been the case for the last few years. To be honest, we did not know much about the movie we were going to see. We only knew that it would be in English and subtitled. Finally, “Lulu and Jimi” turned out to be a nice romantic story with several comical points. Lots of us loved it, so it was a good choice.
“Lulu and Jimi” is about “sweaping love, rock and roll and the fifties”. Lulu and Jimi are the lovers, however Lulu’s mother does the impossible to separate them. She wants her daughter to marry a rich boy, but she does not succeed. In addition, Gertrud, the mother, has a secret lover who is the chauffer, and a wicked old psychiatrist waiting to pounce on his prey, Lulu, like he has done with her father years before. What’s more, Lulu’s brother is hurt in a fight with Jimi and he becomes disabled, nonetheless he saves his sister from the claws of their mother. He kills her, so they are a totally unbalanced family. At the end, Lulu and Jimi have a baby and freedom.
Adventure, love and magic mark this road movie about two lovers fleeing of the rules of a deeply bigoted society and its evil powers.
One of the best things is that you can learn English and German seeing “Lulu and Jimi” like we did, because Lulu and her family live in Germany, but she speaks in English with Jimi, who is American. This is one of the strange and interesting points of the movie too. Another one was the man who saves Jimi in his childhood. He was Lulu’s father, so it is a surprise that they have a part of their past in common.
I might only recommend this movie to the people interested in having a good time. You will love the soundtrack, I promise.
 
 

 Nos dirigíamos a La Laboral de Gijón prácticamente todos los alumnos de 1º Bach. En realidad, no teníamos muy claro qué nos iríamos a encontrar; por supuesto, que íbamos a ver una película lo sabíamos todos pero, ¿quién se imaginaba que dos horas escuchando inglés subtitulado, además de pequeñas partes en alemán, llegarían a tener tanto éxito entre los presentes? Y es que nos retiramos de aquella sala con la satisfacción de haber visto una buena película, en la cual intervino el amor, la aventura… incluso el tiroteo estuvo presente. Es cierto que “Lulu and Jimi” recibió más “puntos” por parte del género femenino que del masculino, probablemente por la dulce historia de amor que se desarrolló durante toda la película. Aún así, y a pesar de haber sido escogida ante pocas posibilidades, la salida pudo catalogarse como lo que fue, una buena elección.Lulu y Jimi protagonizan la película; ambos jóvenes enamorados luchan contra la sociedad de los años cincuenta, y sobre todo, contra la familia de la chica y el malvado psiquiatra, amigo además de la madre de la joven. Lo que es más, este hombre ya había hecho daño al padre de Lulu varios años atrás, provocándole una terrible infelicidad. A pesar de todos los problemas que se les plantean, nuestro americano, y nos referimos a Jimi, y la joven alemana, logran su ansiada libertad al mismo tiempo que consiguen disfrutar de su amor junto a su hijo, y aunque resulte extraño o dramático, fue la muerte de una madre lo que hizo que triunfaran. El hermano de Lulu mató a su propia madre sólo para ayudar a su querida hermana pequeña, a pesar de que Jimi le había dejado postrado en una silla de ruedas tras una pelea años atrás, cuando surgió el amor entre los protagonistas. De esta forma, el padre de Lulu pudo “cobrar vida” tras tanto tiempo en un infierno conviviendo con su mujer, y por supuesto, Lulu y Jimi fueron felices.A lo largo de la película, y como aspecto interesante en su comentario, se habla de un tal “Daddy Cool”. Todos y cada uno de nosotros nos preguntamos quién podría ser este hombre, pero nunca hubiésemos imaginado que sería el padre de Lulu. Daddy Cool no fue más que el salvador de Jimi, que su maestro ante el aprendizaje del disfrute de la vida, que su héroe desde que era tan sólo un niño… Por lo tanto, ambos tenían en gran aprecio a un mismo hombre, sin que ninguno de los dos lo supieran hasta el reencuentro final de la película.Sin duda alguna, recomiendo “Lulu and Jimi”.
