Geometry: Similarity, Ratios, Proportions…

  • Today we are going to start a new unit: Geometry. We are going to work with Geogebra. Listen to the teacher and create a construction about similarity.
  • Save the Geogebra file with the name similarity_your_names and send it to
  • Go to this page and work with “El espejo” and “London eye”. Write down the answers in your notebook.

We have to work a lot more with equations, I think.

Use this link to do ten equations in your notebook.

Now try to solve these problems, writing an equation for each of them. You can use Wiris to help you and check the answers, but you have to write them in the notebook, step by step.

  •     i.    When 6 is added to four times a number, the result is 50. Find the number.
  •     ii.    The sum of a number and 9 is multiplied by -2 and the answer is -8. Find the number.
  •     iii.    On an algebra test, the highest grade was 42 points higher than the lowest grade. The sum of the two grades was 138. Find the lowest grade.
  •     iv.    At the end of the day, a pharmacist counted and found she has 4/3 as many prescriptions for antibiotics as she did for tranquilizers. She had 84 prescriptions for the two types of drugs. How many prescriptions did she have for tranquilizers?
  •     v.    In a given amount of time, Jamie drove twice as far as Rhonda. Altogether they drove 90 miles. Find the number of miles driven by each.
  •     vi.    Karen works for $6 an hour. A total of 25% of her salary is deducted for taxes and insurance. She is trying to save $450 for a new car stereo and speakers. How many hours must she work to take home $450 if she saves all of her earnings?
  •     vii.    The length of a rectangular map is 15 inches and the perimeter is 50 inches. Find the width.
  •     viii.    The circumference of a circular clock face is 13.12 centimeters more than three times the radius. Find the radius of the face.

Today we are going to practice equations from Anaya’s CD. You can use your CD (unit 6) or go here. Try the first 4 sections, and write down in your notebook the exercises you do.

If you finish early, try section 5, equations with denominators.

Algebra 2

My proposal for today:

  1. Open Wiris and use it to correct the multiplications you did yesterday.
  2. Work out in your notebook the exercises 20, 21, 23 and 24, on pages 120 and 121. You can use wiris to correct them, but you have to write all the operations in the notebook.
  3. Open your book on page 116. You can see some special products. You can work with the first of them (square of a sum) in this Geogebra applet.

Algebra 1

These are the tasks for today:

  1. First of all, a little review.
  2. Use your CD of Anaya to do the sections 2 to 6 of the unit “Algebra”. Write them in the notebook.
  3. Use Wiris to correct the activities 12 and 13 of the page 120 of the book.
  4. If you finish early, find out the origin of the word “algebra”, and write it down in your notebook.

  1. Solve this problems in the computer. you have to open a new Word document and solve the problems in the document. You should copy and paste (copiar y pegar).

1. Subraya los pares de magnitudes que sean proporcionales:a)  La edad de una persona y el número de hermanos que tiene.

b)  La velocidad de un móvil y el espacio que recorre en un tiempo determinado.

c)  La velocidad de un coche y el tiempo que tarda en llegar de una ciudad  A  a otra  B.

  • 2. a)  Cinco kilogramos de naranjas han costado 16,5 euros. ¿Cuánto costarán siete kilogramos?

    b)  Si seis litros de agua de mar contienen 150 gramos de sal, ¿qué cantidad de sal podemos extraer de 15 litros? ¿Y de cuatro?


    a)  Nueve camiones cisterna llenan un depósito en tres horas. ¿Cuánto tiempo tardarán en llenar el depósito seis camiones?

    b)  Un grifo que arroja 120 litros por minuto llena un depósito en media hora. ¿Cuánto tardará en llenarse el depósito con un grifo que arroja 40 litros por minuto?


  • Una empresa aporta a fines benéficos 13 euros de cada 260 euros que gana. ¿Cuánto aportó a dichos fines el año anterior si sus beneficios fueron de  55 200 euros?5.

    Un grifo que arroja un caudal de 6,5 litros por minuto tarda 20 minutos en llenar un depósito. ¿Cuánto tardará en llenarse ese mismo depósito si el grifo arroja 10 litros por minuto?


    Tres cosechadoras en tres horas han segado un campo de 27 hectáreas. ¿Cuántas cosechadoras serán necesarias para segar en dos horas 36 hectáreas?


    Con  2 000 kg de pienso un granjero tiene para alimentar a sus  20  vacas durante dos meses. Si compra  10  vacas más y otros  1 600 kg  de pienso, ¿durante cuánto tiempo podrá alimentarlas a todas?


    a)  Una persona mecanografía a una velocidad de  1 680  pulsaciones cada  8  minutos. ¿Cuántas pulsaciones puede realizar en  100  segundos?

    b)  Si seis trabajadores han tardado  15  días en realizar cierto trabajo, ¿cuánto tardarían nueve trabajadores en terminar la misma tarea?


    Para llenar un depósito hasta una altura de 80 cm con un caudal de  20 l/min  se ha necesitado  1 h 20 min. ¿Cuánto tiempo tardará en llenarse ese mismo depósito hasta una altura de  90 cm  con un caudal de  15 l/min?
