Wollstonecraft, Mary (1759-1797)

Publicado por rosarioa.biblioteca el 26 Marzo 2008

She was a writer and an English Feminist. She was born in London in 1759. In 1780 she left her house to earn a living. She ran a school with her sisters for two years. Later, she worked as an instructress in Ireland. The success of her first novel, ‘The novel of Maria’ (1788), made her settle down in London. There, she worked as a teacher and a translator. She was a member of a group of intellectuals which included the poet and English artist William Blake, the Anglo-american political philosopher Thomas Paine, the English chemist Joseph Priestley and the painter and writer Henry Fuseli. Her most famous work was ‘Vindication of Women’s Rights” (1792). There she said that the ideal of marriage lies in intellectual affinity and demanded an equal education and equal opportunities for both sexes. During The French Revolution, she traveled to Paris. There she fell in love with an American writer and traveler called Gilbert Imlay. In 1794 she had her first daughter, and for a while they lived in England, until Imlay left her and she tried to commit suicide. In 1797 she married the political philosopher William Godwin. She died some time later when her second child Mary was born.

Rosa Parks

Publicado por rosarioa.biblioteca el 26 Marzo 2008

 INTRODUCTION:

After the Civil War black people didn’t have the same rights as white people in the United States. Restaurant owners didn’t allow black people to eat in the area reserved for white people. Bus drivers told black people to sit at the back of the buses. At that time Martin Luther King was the leader of the Civil Rights Movement. He led protest in many states. In 1993 he walked with thousands of people to Washington D.C. He gave a speech called “I have a dream”.

On  December 1st, 1955,a black woman called Rosa Parks was very tired and a white man was on the same bus. The driver ordered Parks and three other black men to move to the back of the bus. However, Parks refused to get up from her place, so the driver called the police and the police took her to jail.

The black boycott of Montgomery ‘s city buses was universal on December 5th, 1955. On Tuesday, December 6th, Parks was found guilty. For 381 days, black people car-pooled and walked to work and church, instead of taking the bus.

Parks and her family received numerous threats and constant telephone harassment.

BIOGRAPHY:

Rosa Parks was born on 4th February, 1913 in Tuskegee, Alabama, in the United States. When she was still a child her parents separated and she moved to Montgomery with her mother.

There she grew up in an extended family that included her maternal grandparents and her younger brother, Sylvester.

At twenty Rosa married a barber named Raymond Parks. Rosa Parks died 24th October 2005 at her home in Detroit, Michigan. She was 92.

Today she is considered a hero.

She worked in Montgomery, Alabama, in a series of jobs from 1933 to 1957, including seamstress at Montgomery Fair Department Store. In 1957 she moved to Detroit, Michigan, where she became administrative assistant to the United States Congressman John Conyers, from 1965 to 88. Finally she became director of the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development in Detroit, Michigan. She also wrote a book titled “My Story”, in 1993.
