3) THE CHESTNUT FESTIVAL-07
In Asturias there are many CHESTNUT TREES, so it´s typical to celebrate here the CHESTNUT FESTIVAL in Autumn: the Primary schools all over our region have a special day to eat roast chestnuts and drink sweet cider, which comes from the juice of our delicious apples.
AUTUMN PICTURE made by the teacher BLANCA and her pupils in 2nd A last year:
In the Primary School “San Bartolomé” of Nava we had our CHESTNUT FESTIVAL on November 9th: children ate chestnuts, which had been brought to school by themselves and had been roasted in a bakery of Nava. And, of course, we drank “sweet cider”; everybody in Asturias knows that Nava is one of the best places to drink cider:
The days before the celebration the school organized some events to live a perfect atmosphere. We listened to some falk music…Pupils made cider… The small levels made the typical hat of our regional costume, which is called “montera picona”.

Our Deputy Headteacher, called Mrs. Julia Rodríguez, made this beautiful basket with chestnuts as an ornament to be located in the school hall for the celebration.
She also painted this typical couple wearing the regional costume, so every boy and girl in the school have been taken a photograph performing the scene. Notice that the children have no face: our own pupils put their faces into the hole to recreate it. It was great fun!!!
There was a DISPLAY at the school hall which showed typical antiques and also the typical Autumn fruits: apples, chestnuts, hazelnuts, figs…. The pupils in the school colaborated by lending their owns things to the school exhibition.Thank you very much for your help!!!
Our chestnut festival is a very typical celebration in our region: Asturias. And we all know our flag, which is light blue with a yellow cross in the centre:
