THE WAR OF THE WORLDS (1º BACH)

Publicado en General — 12 Abril 2012 @ 10:00 am

In unit 5 you are going to work with film reviews. In the book you can read a review of this film

Have you seen it? You can have a look at a short clip here

The film was released in 2005 and was directed by Steven Spielberg. It starred Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning and Tim Robbins. It is based on a science-fiction novel by H. G. Wells, written in 1898, which tells the invasion of the Earth by Matians who feed on human beings to survive.

In 1938, Orson Wells, the famous director and actor, did a radio adaptation of the novel which caused panic among listeners in parts of the USA who believed the invasion was real. If you want to listen to it, you can do it here

And if you want more information about the whole story you can have a look at this page I’ve found, written by a fan.

TOUCHING THE VOID (3º ESO, unit 5)

Publicado en General — 9 Marzo 2011 @ 11:13 am

In this unit you are going to work with an exercise that tells us the story of this man,

called Joe Simons, and his amazing adventure.

His book Touching the Void, has become one of the all time classics of mountaineering. It is a tale of two men thrown into a nightmare of terrifying life and death choices and heartbreaking decisions. It is about agony and terror, courage and weakness. It tells of trust and friendship tested to the very limits of human endurance. It is about the triumph of the human spirit, the immense instinct to survive and the innate strength we have within us to succeed. Here you can find a synopsis of the book.

If you have a look at this photograph, you will realize how much he suffered during his terrible adventure.

In 2003, fifteen years after it was first published, the book was turned into a documentary film of the same name, directed by Kevin MacDonald. You can watch a short extract from the film.

Well, maybe now you are looking forward to reading the book or watching the film! I hope so!

Carla Hevia (3º ESO A) tells us about Wikileaks

Publicado en General — 3 Febrero 2011 @ 2:44 pm

Thursday, 3th February.

All 3ºESO students have gone to Cudillero to watch and enjoy a theatre play (La zapatera prodigiosa). Carla Hevia didn’t join them, and we’ve decided to have a special class together. She is looking in the web for information about a topic she is interested in (Wikileaks) and writing a summary of it. This is what she has discovered:

Wikileaks  It’s a website registered on 4 October 2006. It’s created by Julian Assagne, an Australian Internet activist.  The purpose of Assagne is to reveal unethical behaviour of governments of the world. He is very criticized and defended because he’s website have a very important and confidential information about Iraq war, China or United States, for example. In August 2010 the Swedish Pirate Party signed an agreement Wikileaks for get immunity of the page. But this Party doesn’t win the elections and they can’t protect Wikileaks. On December 6, 2010 in defending Wikileaks, the Internet group Anonymous launches Operation Payback, PostFinance against the blockade and PayPal accounts WikiLeaks.

GOOD WORK, Carla!

WELCOME BACK!!

Publicado en General — 12 Enero 2011 @ 11:14 am

Well, we are all here again. We know it must be a bit difficult to get used to the daily routine, so we suggest some funny things to cheer you up.

Let’s start with some QUIZES. Don’t worry, they are general ones. You can test your knowledge on topics suchs as Harry Potter, Orlando Bloom, capitals of the world, etc.

Too difficult? Here you have other quizes which are more simple.

XMAS IS NEAR!!

Publicado en General — 15 Diciembre 2010 @ 12:37 pm

I don’t know if you like Christmas as much as I do,  but you can still learn and practise your English with some activities related to this magical time of the year.

Let´s start with a QUIZ to learn about how Xmas is celebrated around the world. If you have problems answering the questions, you can have a look at this site which gives lots of information about Christmas in the world, starting with Christmas in the UK.

Have you learnt any new things? I’m sure you have.

What about some LISTENING practice? In the activity WHOSE PRESENTS? you must listen carefully to help Santa find the best presents for each child. If you haven’t got headphones or you don’t understand very well, you can also read what they say.

Now some VOCABULARY. First have a look at the following flashcards to learn some new words related to Christmas.

Then do this activity sheet on some CHRISTMAS WORDS  and print it to give it to your teacher.

We can’t finish without listening to a Xmas song. My favourite is John Lennon’s “Happy Xmas, war is over”. Enjoy it!!

And now you can sing it in this karaoke video!

Would you like to visit Santa’s village, meet the elfs and write a letter to Santa? If you do, you will get a letter back from Santa Claus himself in your e-mail address!

THE BOSS

Publicado en General — 1 Diciembre 2010 @ 10:39 am

BRUCE SPRINSGTEEN, also known as The Boss, is probably one of the best musicians in the history of Rock and Roll.

I love his music and , in my opinion, this former truck driver is one of the sexiest men in the world. You may give your own opinion after having a look  at this photograph:

Maybe you are interested in his complete BIOGRAPHY, but it´s his music that interests most people. So it´s about time we have a look at one of his songs. I´ve chosen one of my favourite. It´s called “TWO FACES” and talks about something that unfortunately is quite common in today’s society, domestic violence. You may remember that 25th November was the Day against Domestic Violence. I hope this activity makes you think about this terrible problem and all the people that suffer it.

Now that you have enjoyed it, I propose an activity: listen to the song again and try to correct the mistakes in it. If you have any problems you can look at the correct lyrics  at the bottom.

Bruce Springsteen     Tunnel Of Love, 1987

“Six Faces”

I met a boy and we ran away
I swore I’d make her miserable every day
And how I made her write

Six faces have I

Sometimes sister I feel sunny and wild
Lord I love to see my baby cry
Then black clouds come rolling by
Six faces have I

One that laughs one that smiles
One says goodbye one says hello
One does things I don’t remember
Makes me feel like half an animal

In the afternoon I get down on my knees and pray
Our love will make that other man run away
But he’ll never say hello
Six faces have I

Last night as I kissed you ‘neath the willow three
He swore he’d send your love away from me
He said our life was just a tie
And six faces have I
Well go ahead and let him cry

You can have a look at the correct  lyrics here and you can also listen to the song again and others. Enjoy yourself!
